Reminder for those who appreciate a little geriatric aeroporn and are within striking distance of SEQ, TAVAS are putting on a do this weekend at Caboolture. My flying plans got a little complicated, however I plan on an IFR arrival via the M1 and an Aerodrome Dr approach.

Drove past the airport a few weeks ago on a visit from the frozen South. What a lovely spot!

You're talking about Caboolture right?

I trundled up this morning and wandered around looking at the lovely toys the TAVAS crew have been putting together, as well as a fair selection of other shiny old aircraft. A good morning's entertainment, although it started on a slightly off note, with no less than 5 individuals trying to get their sticky fingers into my wallet before I'd even got past the first hangar. Talk about charity fatigue.

A couple of observations; for me, and I don't think I'm alone, the huffing, banging and smoke of a vintage aircraft starting is a big part of the action and I think the organisers missed an opportunity by having the starts way out in the middle of nowhere. I'm thinking particularly of the Fokker D V11 and Mustang here. Also, whilst the DH assortment across the front of the crowdline was attractive and afforded a close up view of prop swinging, it obscured the runway for most of the crowd and more than one photo was ruined by an errant wing or rudder photo bombing the action.

Flying photos were fairly challenging because of the action being up sun, but I'll post a small selection in the photo thread.

It was a good day out at Caboolture today and appears to have been well attended.
To be fair Spinex, the Fokker D VIII is really not conducive to taxiing and it was launched straight ahead after a quick power assurance run after starting. It did look and sound great in the air, with the engine being controlled by the number of cylinders allowed to fire. :)

I take your point re taxi challenges, mightyauster, although there is a video doing the rounds of Sunday's proceedings, where the Fokker is started much closer to the crowdline, tethered to a ute via a snatch strap or similar. Made for a great spectacle.

While enjoying a BBQ at Coolum Beach, I was gruntled to hear the growl of a Merlin as the Mustang galloped up the coast. What a marvellous sound!
