I've noticed other thread's beginning to become polluted with election cruft, lets restrain it to this single thread.

Who's going to win and why? Handing over...

Ideology & political hatred as a bloodsport: Best of Enemies (2015) Gore Vidal vs William F Buckley Jr debates 1968 (http://www.nytimes.com/2015/07/26/movies/buckley-vs-vidal-when-debate-became-bloodsport.html?_r=0).

With a 72 day time period it will not become clear for weeks who is ahead. Clearly the Libs aim is to secure the Senate majority but that will be dependant on both State and local issues as well as Federal.

For example, in my area in NSW the big issue is local council forced amalgamations. While that is clearly not a Federal issue the timing of the Federal election to this process has become a de facto plebiscite on the issue, with our Federal member as well as the State member weighing in on the issue in what seems to be a vain attempt to distance themselves from a locally very unpopular move. So far the local process seems to be very successful with a very large amount of community support.

If the Aviation Community wants the same sort of leverage clearly they will have to focus on what we can win and that is probably in the Senate. The success of Nick X in pushing our cause proves that we should push for the Senate. However to do this will require a huge amount of co ordination and funding. Is that going to happen?
Probably not in my experience unless a coordinating group is to step up.

I do not understand this. It seems the same angry folks who want other "small government" policies except here want an inefficient devolved bureaucracy for filling in pot holes and collecting bins. They are campaigning on a loss of local identity, when I have never heard someone refer to the local council area they live but the suburb (eg; Avalon) or the area (eg; North Shore). It's just such a bizarre situation to what seems like a no brainer to me.

This thread is not about NSW Council amalgamations. I just used it as an example of how communities can successfully get leverage by concentrated local organisations.

The problem with the Aviation Industry is that it never gets any decent organisation together for anything so I don't see how anything Federally can be achieved during this coming period.

As an aside ,if your local community was about to be asset stripped and lose very scares local jobs for absolutely no advantages, I think that you would see it as more than who fills potholes? But this thread is the Aviation Industry in action so it probably will descend into name calling and undercutting your mates.

How is Dick going? Does he still have ambitions to run in Bronwyn Bishop's electorate?

Dick's terms were always that he would run against her if she ran again. The good preselectors of Mackellar have decided for generational change and nominated a young bloke instead.

This was always about Dick bullying the Liberal Party into doing what he wanted. He has threatened to run against John Anderson in the past, but he has never actually put his coconuts on the line.

It's a bit like his line back in the 1990s that he was fully qualified to be a Commercial pilot, he just had to complete the exams. Anyone else remember that one? The fact is that being a Commercial Pilot takes discipline, team skills, and the ability to follow someone else's instructions - a lot like being a Party politician.

...so let's all have a nice cup of tea and relax, because Dick will never actually do it.

But Mr Albanese said advances in technology had made it possible for planes to land into the wind.

Either Mr Albanese needs a new advisor, or the media need better proofing prior to the release of an article.

How about introducing a higher depreciation rate for GA to allow more new aircraft into operations?

How about building CAR135-lite?
CASR 42-lite?

...and generally acknowledging the reality that ops <5700kg generate much less revenue than their bigger counterparts?

...the extra money doesn't buy new Audis for the business owner, it goes to paying for better maintenance and maybe a few perks for the pilots.

Unfortunately said new candidate is a another Party Apparatchik with little experience in the real world, was highly vocal against the boat/economic migrant read `refugees' in his language policies and thinks the planet is overheating.

Very much aligned with Malcolm.

I am not in this electorate however, if I was he would not be getting my vote.

Further South (Victoria) the candidate replacing Andrew Robb is openly homosexual being ex Human Rights Commissioner; hardly what the average Liberal voter would expect to represent their views.

The Senate will be a disaster ending up hung again probably more so.

The Liberal Party will have a hard time winning this election with the number of seats lost making Malcolm remaining as leader very tenuous indeed. Cannot happen soon enough in my humble opinion.

I'm prepared for three years hard "Labor" to get rid of the idiots in the "Alternative Party" who represent barely any of their normal constituency.

The Informal vote will be above 1,000,000 this election. Mark my words and if wrong I'll apologize.

Horatio. You ask if " anyone can remember" that one.

I certainly can't

Why would I require a commercial license? I asked my wife to get me immediately certified if I was ever seen attempting to make money out of aviation.

I admire all of those who do- but certainly behond my abilities.

And I am not sure about the " bullying". I thought everyone had the right to openly state what they believe about such matters. Sort of what democracy is about.

what happens if we end up with another hung senate?(where nothing gets done) PUP is dead, but we have this new seniors party & the ALA.

Not much use winning the lower house, if you don't control or effectively control the senate with some sort of coalition.

You might be, Frank, but I doubt that the Australian economy is!

And the Oz economy has done so fantastically well under the LNP - just as well there wasn't a GFC to affect it further in that time.

I've heard a lot said in the media that the Coalition have no evidence upon which to base their claims that house prices will fall under the ALP's negative gearing policy. I've also heard numerous experts suggest that it now takes the average punter 6 to 8 times their take home annual wage to buy the average first home.

So lets say the ALP are elected and implement their policy. Can someone explain to me how it will have any effect on the opportunity for the average couple/family to buy a home if prices don't fall?

I get that it is intended to drive investors from the market for existing homes, but if demand falls significantly, so will prices.

It strikes me that the policy is intended to drive prices down otherwise it will be ineffective. So why the criticism of the Coalition's argument that house prices will fall and why are the ALP saying they won't?

Unnecessary disclaimer…….I don't have negatively geared property…..

A perfect example of how the spin doctors manipulate the media, and of how the pollies are ****-scared of actually trying to have a debate that is more about shades of grey and the national interest then good/bad black/white us/them party crap.

Vote for an independent because "Party unity" is getting this country nowhere.

And a mob of independents would??

Apologies Horatio, but here I disagree. A mob of Independents would quickly degenerate into total paralysis of the Parliament with all of them, having their own axes to grind, be totally incapable of agreeing on anything! (Except maybe a pay rise for themselves!:ugh:)

I suspect that they would very quickly develop a large sense of self-importance and each of them would push the view that 'I was elected to this seat therefore my opinion/policies must prevail!'

Is it not a fact that part of the current inability of the Government to be able to pass its legislation is due to a Senate being seemingly held to ransom by a few Independents? One elected with, what was it.. less than 1% of the Primary vote?

To be fair to Ricky Muir, he voted in favour of changes to senate voting rules that will more or less ensure he will never see another day in Parliament after this election. It was the right decision to make but it was still against his own interests. That certainly puts him a step above the majority of the mob that populate Canberra.

Except the hung parliament passed the most legislation of a parliament for years. I wouldn't worry about voting for someone other than the big 2. They are much more happy to compromise and actually craft an acceptable policy for all than ram through their ideological dreams (a criticism of both Liberal and Labor)

Labors changes will only apply to new housing, and there is varying stages of grandfather in the implementation. Basically it should avoid a crash in property prices (but let's be honest, we have a bubble that could crash at any moment anyway), allow people currently using negative gearing to reduce their income tax to continue to do so with their current investments, and hopefully reduce prices on new properties to assist new entrants to the property market.
