Is there any reason why the majority of countries/airlines carry under wing registrations,whilst French and U.S.A. do not.

Presumeably because it is not compulsory in those countries although I have seen aircraft from both with wing regs . Until recently i think only USA and Russia /USSR and Japan used numeric registrations after the country identifier letter too.
Other countries go the whole hog and specify exactly where the registration must go, the size of letters etc
On a lighter note they are also the two countries least likely to conform to anything global and go their own way-the USA because i t is big and inward looking and France because it is France ' c 'est la vie' but I would have thought the joint EU regulations might have caught up with them on this one

As suspected the FAA ruled in 1960 that US registered aircraft no longer needed wing registrations

China too.. and one or two south/central american airlines.

Didn't know that French a/c do not have the reg' under the wing. Going back a few years, they always used to have it. I well remember the AFR Super Connies flying over Guernsey cFL140 & being able to read off the reg' through binoculars. Mind you, it was quite easy with a huge F-B on the starboard wing & GNG etc. on the port wing.

HD you are right of course-I added USSR and China as after thought and after wards remembered a few others - and Mr Kockayne that indeed was what Iwas thinking of , the French had gigantic letters under wings so maybe Airfrance wanted to save a bit of paint weight as asked the Ministry to ease up on them LoL.
There is page I found on Google about US numbers and how they ended up with N-quite a complex story but I didnt see anything specifically about France. The other wing style back in those days was on top of one wing and under the other

You didn't know because it's not true, well certainly not always, so I'm not sure where the OP got his info from.
Our local club aircraft down here in southern France certainly carry the reg under their wings, as does at least some of the bigger stuff that is made just up the road and do flight tests over our local area. The under wing registration is clearly visible in this image:

If only the TWA Starliners had been so well inscribed but you needed an astro telescope to read the reg off the fuselage!
