Hi all,

I am currently flying in China, captain on a CL-605 about 1 year in on a 3 year contract. My wife and kids moved to China with me and she's adamant that we are heading back to the US after the contract is up. I spent nearly 10 years at a US regional, the last 3 as a captain. I applied to the majors but had no luck for quite a while which was a big factor in the move to China, along with my wife's desire to stay home with the kids and our desire to spend some time in a different part of the world.

For me, as a family man with young kids, I feel that long term the best place for me is at the airlines, with the regular schedule and stability which is desirable at this stage in my life. Ive heard anecdotal evidence about it being somewhat difficult to get a job at a major coming from the corporate flying world. Does anyone have any advice for me about ways to improve my chances at success given that's what my goal will be upon returning to the US?

One of the things I'm doing while I'm in China to boost my chances is finishing my BA degree online. I feel that was a large barrier to my getting hired previously.

I'd appreciate any input.

Without the bachelor degree, it will be very hard to get hired at a major. Not impossible, but it's good that you are working on it now. Getting some recency in 121 won't hurt at all, but obviously it'll be tough on the finances until you can get hired somewhere. Pay had improved recently and everyone is hiring.

You may have a chance right away with Frontier Airlines. You may have a shot with some ACMI carriers as well.

There are lots of choices so let us know if you have any questions.
