The photographs were taken from the lake-edge in the downtown area of Wanaka on Good Friday, 25th March during Warbirds Over Wanaka 2016. The video clips were taken from onboard ZK-PBY on Easter Sunday morning, 27th March, also during Warbirds Over Wanaka 2016.

Didn't the late Ray Hanna have a farm (with a strip of course) on the shores of Lake Wanaka. I guess it was to the left of the landing PBY. Great shots and a fabulous area to fly in.

Lovely jubbly. My late Dad spent a number of hours in Catalinas at the MAEE Felixstowe before the war. He would have loved to have seen these ....

A retired AVM friend gained 2 DFCs on Catalinas, one for a 23+hour flight to north of the Arctic Circle, the other for happening upon an Italian submarine in the Med and sinking it.

Conditions were extremely turbulent and the surface of the lake was rather choppy, so it was only a touch & go, but it's a blast from the past.

Note the Warbirds Dakota (ZK-DAK) towards the top of the frame flying so passengers onboard the DC-3 could observe the Catalina landing on the lake. Immediately after the Catalina flight, I went for a flight on the Dakota and on that flight they also overflew the Catalina doing a touch & go on the lake. The two aeroplanes were co-ordinating with each other on those joyrides that weekend.

The video isn't HD (I was using much more basic camera gear back then), plus the footage is fairly shaky due to the turbulence and the rough water, but it is still interesting.
