I watched the Mayday episode about this incident a couple weeks ago and it's been on my mind quite a bit since. I understand the main contributors to this accident was the course setting being entered as 0270 instead of 027. That along with the phenomenon of confirmation bias which led the crew to think that everything was alright. Anybody who's watched the episode of the Vincennes incident will know how much of a influence confirmation bias can be. What I really find hard to understand is how the crew could not of noticed the fact they took off into the setting sun and it seems it never occurred to them to turn towards the northerly direction required. I'm assuming the Captain had flown the São Paulo to Belém route many times before? Is it possible that confirmation bias influenced him to the point that he ignored such a telling sign that something wasn't right?
