Excess Baggage Size

I'm looking to bring a package (box) from the US (IAH) to UK, dimensions are 45" X 24" X 10" so 79" or around 200cm total dimensions, weight is 9Kg.

The overall size seems to exceed the permitted dimensions of most carriers and place it into super price categories to check it in. Potential carriers would seem to be BA, AF/KLM, LH.

Is there a way to bring this back as a piece of checked luggage in an economic manner before resorting to other methods of shipment?

Wrap it well & visit the nearest FedEx agent.


Or, see if it will fit in a hardcase for a golf bag.


Either way it's gonna cost you......

Many carriers will allow you to book this AHEAD OF DEPARTURE as freight and the rates are very much better than over weight luggage. Check their websites.

Thanks, need to look into that and understand any Tax/Duty implications that might apply.

Check the US airlines as well. Might be one stop but no different than AF/KL/LH. If you approach the airlines with 9kg (outsized) as freight it's going to move at the -45/100kg rate, probably surcharged. Or the equivalent of paying the rack rate.

Do you know any freight brokers? By consolidating this with other shipments they might be able to get you a better rate, but ... Try the Yellow Pages.

Try Emirates as well, they have got a lot of belly space to fill and they need to be competitive to get the business. You wouldn't go via DXB but a package doesn't care.

Once took a large crate as excess baggage out to Gib. All was OK (expensive) as had checked it with BA beforehand.

When bringing it back to the UK a few months later they refused to carry it. They'd changed the aircraft type used on the route. The cargo door was smaller than the old aircraft and the crate wouldn't fit!
