Could it be there for conversion into an air-launching space vehicles platform?

Maybe not. G-VROY flew recently form Heathrow to Cambridge and a couple of days later was back serving Gatwick.

Are you sure?

G-VROY is a very rare sight at Heathrow and AFAIK its most recent visit was when it positioned from/to Manchester in June of last year to do an LHR-JFK-LHR rotation.

Missed that one!
Marshall's doing a fair bit of work on aircraft coming off-lease and moving on of late....

G-VBIG is there for a few weeks storage and then off for a refit into the Gatwick config where it will resume flying from Gatwick.

Dave,
My mistake! Working from memory and memory appears to be broken. It was in fact the aforementioned G-VBIG that I saw leave LHR (13th January) and I followed it on Planefinder up to Cambridge. Mainly due to this being after Virgin had withdrawn the 747s from LHR. (until the next one!)
Perhaps G-VROY was in the back of my mind at the time. I have often seen this one at Manchester. Sorry for the confusion!
