Hi
Just wondering what the effect of sound waves would be on planes flying in the vicinity of the Russian meteorite in 2013...

It blew out windows at ground level and, being a big city with 1m people, I am sure there were planes in the area at the time

Cheers

If there were any aircraft affected, we'd have heard about it by now, as anything that happens to aviation is broadcast in the media in oft hysterical tones when in reality it's a normal occurrence.

I'd hazard a guess that if any aircraft had been in the vicinity in the air the shock waves would have had minimal effect as they would have gone both through and around the fuselage, whereas at ground level the shock wave came to an abrupt halt (mostly) and the transfer of energy wreaked havoc on low tensile surfaces, such as glass etc. :8

Could a shockwave like the one being discussed cause any disruption to the engines? (I was thinking something such as a compressor stall).

thanks....so no impact on the windows then? Looking at some of the footage of factory doors being blown in, the force would have been huge...

scary stuff....

It's actually a bolide, a meteor which burns up before it reaches the surface.

What do they call the bits (500+kgs I believe ) that made it to the ground? (In the frozen lake evidently)

£££££££$$$$$$$$$€€€€€€, those 'bits' are worth a lot of money if presented to a collector or science institute.
