I have read something recently about not being allowed CAPs in the EASA ATPL exams... forgive my ignorance, but what are CAPS?

I am self-certifying to write the exams for conversion of my ICAO ATPL, and was looking at this course by bristol https://www.bristol.gs/product/atpdigital-cbt-jeppesen-manual-exams-guides-caps-2/

Do I need to buy this one, or get the slightly cheaper online course only (without CAPS)?

Thanks!

That's correct - the flight planning and performance exams (and M & B) used to be based on CAP 696, 697 and 698 - now the relevant charts are included in the questions. But the definitions aren't! You can download the CAPs from the CAA website (so the answer is that you don't need that particular course) but you can't take the CAPs into the exams any more. However they are still essential reading.

Note, however, that some of the new questions are not based on them, but they shouldn't be a problem to people who know the basic principles of using charts.

A recent Performance exam contained 5 graph related questions which, in total, made up nearly 25% of the marks.
They were based on 4 individual graphs and one had two questions related to it.
It's important that you download and familiarise yourself with the CAP from the CAA website and know how to use them for related questions.

The actual graphs used in the exam are provided in a Workbook given in the exam room.

Hope that helps
