CATHAY PACIFIC SET TO BE ONLY AIRLINE IMPLEMENTING PASSENGER FUEL SURCHARGE IN HONG KONG
TP EDITORIAL TEAMDECEMBER 9, 2015

Cathay Pacific will be the only airline operating in Hong Kong that charges passengers a fuel surcharge from next month, the Civil Aviation Department (CAD) announced on Friday.

The list of approved applications of airlines allowed to implement a surcharge dropped from 72 in November to only one, which is Cathay Pacific.

A CAD spokesperson told Apple Daily that – for the time being – only Cathay Pacific will be approved to roll out a fuel surcharge. As it takes time to handle the applications of other airlines, the list will be updated in due course. However, the spokesperson did not confirm how many airlines will be charging the fee in the future.

The newspaper reported that airlines announced they had cancelled the surcharge due to drop in oil prices.

From December, Cathay Pacific may charge a maximum of HK$25 for short haul flights and HK$112 for long haul flights.

Passenger fuel surcharges are intended to allow airlines to partially recover the increase in operational costs due to fluctuations in aviation fuel prices.

As the aeronautical authority in Hong Kong, the CAD considers and approves fuel surcharge applications from airlines in accordance with bilateral Air Services Agreements.

Passenger fuel surcharges are reviewed by the CAD on a monthly basis. The applicable surcharge levels are based on the ticket issue date.

Meanwhile, the Cathay Pacific Airways Flight Attendants Union, consisting of more than 7,000 flight attendants, is demanding a six percent raise from the airline.

In August, the airline announced that half-yearly profits this year were almost five times of that in 2014.

There have been discussions on no fuel surcharge for some airlines.
The pace of reduction in fuel surcharge has been so slow over years.
