ok, i understand about getting my ppl, then atpl, then 250 hours, then a (fingers crossed) job. do i need anything else, any more abreviated qualifications that i see everyday on pprune?! cheers.

You've pretty much hit the nail on the head. I presume you mean by 'get the ATPL' that you mean doing the ATPL exams.
PPL is the place to start, so get yourself to a flying school and pray for some good weather.

1)Get your CPL and IR.
2)Do the ATPL exams instead of the CPL ones to save doing some of the same things twice.
3)Do your MCC
4)Get a job!
Hardest is number 4!!!!
