A Greek air force pilot allegedly commandeered his F-16 and flew the plane to neighbouring Turkey to withdraw €2,000 from ATMs, to get around the countries currency restrictions.

Greek air force pilot 'flew F16 to Turkey' to withdraw euros - Telegraph (http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/europe/greece/11750942/Greek-air-force-pilot-flew-F16-to-Turkey-to-withdraw-euros.html)

Are things that desperate? ;)

Seems a bit far fetched. Mind, I'm still surprised that the Greek F-16 demo came all the way to Fairford for RIAT. I believe there was some talk in the crowd of a whip-round for the pilot after the display, but as the Belgian F-16 solo was considered better we gave him the money instead...

Let alone getting rid of Turkish QRA when he 'violated' Turkish airspace (see last week's story of fraternal relations across the Aegean).

In any case, there's no way anyone from Air Traffic Management (ATM) would have €2,000 on them!

Ah, well. There are cash machines in Istanbul and Ankara that happily dispense Euros, as well as dollars, and of course, the rapidly-weakening Turkish Lira (now a rather sporty 4.4 lire to the £).
