Just had the wife on the phone.

It seems that the keyboard lead at the keyboard grommet became damaged with use, ultimately resulting in the wires short-circuiting and creating a small fire.

Just a general post to demonstrate the risk.

Thank you for reading.

Rail Engineer,

USB or PS/2 ?
Brand name or cheap unbranded ?
Did you have any flammable materials on your desk ?
How much were you manhandling the keyboard to cause such extensive grommet wear ? Do you have kids around or something ?

Not doubting your story in the slightest, but just seems weird given the minuscule amps passing through the cables !

At least your wife was at home.

To answer your questions

1 USB
2 Brand - not sure but was supplied by the custom system maker and was not cheap. System was/is a gaming machine used by the youngest lad (22)
3 Nothing flammable
4 Not sure. He is keeping to show me when I next travel back home to UK
5 No kids
6 Miniscule until the circuit shorts and then the current will increase exponentially until some either trips, fuses, or ultimately breaks the circuit
7 Lad was using it at the time.
