111 Sqn Badge

Afternoon all,

One of our instructors is bowing out after a particularly illustrious career and we're trying to get a little something made with all of their sqn badges on. I'm struggling with 111 Sqn, as I need a high-res image to send off to the designer of the work.

I've managed to find the image below, which is lacking a top and bottom but I think will do if no one has anything. I'm afraid I joined when 111 Sqn was no longer A Thing, so if anyone could confirm the below image is correct in colour and design, I'd appreciate it.

I suggest giving 'Squadron Prints' a buzz. They have a fairly close association with Leuchars and likely to know your instructor personally, so without wishing to speak for them, there's a pretty good chance they'll give you a hand.

Try 01241 437 555 and try to speak to Gillian or Berry, they're both top characters.

I hope pba_target's post will help. Decent images of Sqn badges are incredibly hard to find on the Internet.

For what it's worth, the colours on the image you posted look fine. But then I was always on the real Sqn at Leuchars, so may not have paid enough attention. :cool:

Speak to Air Command Graphics, they have a bank of nearly all Sqn and station crests in various formats.

The biggest issue with the badges on the net is that they are Crown Copyright and MOD IRP have the licencing rights for them (and they will charge you for usage of them in some shape or form if you use them officially outside of service usage). Seems to some of those badges have the squadron number in Roman (CXI) and others in Arabic (111). Whatever is on the Sqn Standard and the badge signed by the Queen is the correct one (I suspect its the former, though the two high quality copies I have which were both produced by the Strike Command Graphics Office (one of them from the poster of operational RAF Squadrons in the late 70's / early 80's and the 2001 RAF image manual are different in that both formats of numbering are used (Roman on the 1970s one, Arabic on the later)).

Big Unit Specialist is spot on reference Air Command Graphics holding the majority of the unit badges, thought as stated, the 111 Sqn badge they have may be incorrect in the number format used (The 6 Sqn badge that they produced on the two sources I listed above had major errors compared to what was on the original signed copy).

The RAF club have copies of the squadron badges framed and displayed in the corridors. A request to them for a photograph of the badge might work.

A few years ago, the RAF Marham website had a collection of RAF / RCAF / Station crests on the site. That was until an officious Aux / RAFR Officer in the AHB said they were copyrighted and had to be removed. The crest images were around 1.48 x 2 inches 300px in size. I am sure these could be scaled up to a larger size.

If you can find someone who downloaded the collection before they were removed .... :oh:

The story of the Marham web site badges was more to do with how they were hosted on the Station Internet page as the guy who did them was the station graphics officer who could produce them (If what I was told was true, they lived on a external server and not an MoD one). They did remain on the Intranet for a while though the move to a common web format across the whole RAF most likely killed the whole thing. I doubt AHB were the prime drivers, more likely to have been MoD IRP at Abbey Wood (There was also the fact that the main RAF Internet site was being managed and produced by an external contractor at the time (Deltaweb) so it most likely breached the contract as they were doing badges and aircraft drawings for the historical squadron pages that were on the main site at the time).

Somebody did copy a lot of them ;) off the Intranet (however 111 Sqn wasn't one of them) though like the STC / Air Command produced ones, some of them have major errors compared to the originals signed by the monarch or on the Sqn Standard. The other thing (and I have this on authority from a station photo section at my last unit and a member of the public who was driving the production of a memorial plinth at a former station that I was based at) is that the IRP people are very big on using an official copy of the badge as used on the main RAF website for any licensed use. In the case of the memorial they didn't charge the going rate for reproduction fees, but did insist that graphics supplied by them were used (which cost the guy around a tenner).

The RAF website shows the 111 Sqn badge using roman numerals, so that is the correct format.

Roman numerals can be very confusing. I overheard two girls on a bus which was passing a theatre. One of the girls turned to her friend: "Don't fancy that much - Richard the 'undred and Eleventh".

Re the original post and picture- the 3 sea-axes are the wrong way around-:= should be handles port, blades stbd, notches down. Also everything I've ever seen says CXI. Ref, RAF - 111 Squadron (http://www.raf.mod.uk/organisation/111squadron.cfm) My wall plaque is that way, as is the picture in the book 'Adstantes' but most authoritatively, on my old coffee mug!:ok:

As part of the closure of RAF Leuchars the station had a special commemorative coin struck. They had to be pre ordered, having served at Leuchars I ordered one for myself and another for a family member who also served there. They are good quality. If you may be interested I can make some enquiries to see if it is possible to still acquire one.
