Dumbass question time.

On a Tornado display sortie, what does the Nav actually do? I guess he/she ensures the jet gets to the right grid reference at the right time, but what then? I can't imagine they're working the weapons systems (of whatever variant), and the navigating bit's been done.

I'm just curious, not looking to be an arse.

Roadster280,

Sorry, just spotted that no one has answered your question. Think about a nav in a rally car and it's a good starting point. The Nav commentates the sequence, calls out check heights and cross checks them. Does timing and confirms alignments with respect to runway, display line, crowd line and other features. basically never stops talking:E.

Just in case you all think I've gone soft, the Nav then carries the pilot's bag, makes tea, drives him to the hotel and buys him beers and cleans his flying boots.

I think the photo was taken by Flight's Janice Lowe? From my flight deck window.

Having been given the task of flying all the various TV crews and journos in our VC10K2, I was told not to tell anyone. So I didn't....

...not even the Boss! When he found out, we had the following conversation:

"Why didn't you tell me?"
"Because I'd been ordered not to. Besides, if I had told you, you'd only have pinched the trip!"
"I certainly would have!"

Taken from a Nimrod off Cyprus, the F3 having been Alpha Controlled for a Stern VID by a Shackleton. This being 1990, it was probably one of the last the Shackleton did.
The Shack also dropped liferafts on us for our dinghy drill. And I do mean on us, not very near us - we had to use miniflares as SAMs to drive the b#ggers off (which tells you how low they were)!

BEags, re the Mig-29s, which we escorted into Farnborough that day; Tony Pax and self in CT. Some cool form leading by the Funbus that day, if you recall, with a fair bit of cloud to descend through and us all (F3 and Mig-29!) hanging in there. After landing we met Kvotchur, who had the hardest handshake I've ever experienced. Interesting day.

I'm no expert, but I used to hear Tornado folk talk about a "big jugs" fit...would this be it? :E

BEagle
9th Jun 2015, 14:09
27mm, I do indeed recall it! It was indeed quite tricky leading that formation with all that cloud and one of the F3s kept getting between us and the MiG 29s, making the job of the journos more difficult. We had BBC, ITN, UPI, AP, Flight, Aviation Leak and TASS all taking turns to squeeze behind me to get their piccies. Janice wriggling into position was rather nice though!

Whilst we were trying to get Anatoly and his buddy to follow us through the frequency changes, we were fighting off London on the other box - we must have caused mayhem in that sector!

But the journos got their photos and the TV crews got their video onto the 6 o'clock news! DCO!!

The sneaky-beakies had a ploy to work out the fuel consumption of the MiG 29 - a Canberra with IR cameras flew over Farnborough not long after the formation had landed to see how much was in the tanks. Then every day they kept a log of how much had been supplied after each flying display... But the Sovs obviously knew of their plan as the final fuel for the trip back to the Rodina was supplied from their own source!

Re. the handshake, DB confirmed that it was indeed a bone-crusher!

My arrival check on my first squadron has PD Paphos on it, and my last detachment in the RAF was Cyprus. I defended it during Desert Shield (the nurses were soooooooooo grateful ;)) and I have been more times than I can count - what with the Animal House fridge and jugs of Brandy Sours, that would be twice, at least.
There are times you are glad your jet can be landed by a ham-fisted idiot with a hangover (as is your nav, especially as he paused on the walkout to throw up behind the chocks box). Without even being asked, I ensured my landing woke him up again so he could pretend to be alert on the walk-in

p.s. Halloumi, every time! Despite being in the Back of Beyond, they sell it here, and my neighbour's girlfriend's homemade red wine stands in very well for kokkinelli.

Back in the late '60s or early '70s, there was a report in Air Clues (or possibly the Learning Command crash comic) about an incident during Civil Defence training with a civvy copper.

To the uninitiated, this was great fun. Sponsored by the Home Office, once a year UAS QFIs would fly firemen and policemen around at low level, practising some convoy control and other stuff required as 'post nuclear attack' activity. This legacy of the 1950s was eventually binned when some fun detector queried it around the turn of the century....:(

Back to the incident in question - it seems that the rather large copper hadn't been strapped in very tightly and during turbulence he'd managed to get his helmet stuck through the canopy roof. But there was an excellent cartoon of some rozzer in typical Dixon of Dock Green kit with his policeman's helmet poking out of the top of a Chippy.

Of course in reality he was wearing a proper bone dome, but it was a great cartoon. From the days when a little levity was still allowed in official publications.....

I particularly loved the line about the service the Tornado has seen, "They have also played minor roles in Afghanistan and Yemen."

Not sure those involved either with the RAF or the RSAF would agree with this, and describe their role as minor.

"...they were also sold to South Africa"

They were?

Redhill, I was "stunned, outraged and offended" (to use the appropriate journalistic terms) by that too. So much so that I felt compelled to write to the editor of the Lincs Rag to point out their shameful misrepresentation of the Tornado's long and distinguished history.

I could have said that I emailed them, but it wouldn't have been nearly as much fun.

I'll let you know if I get an answer.

F3WMB,

I'm working from a gin riddled memory here, so please forgive me if I'm wrong.

I believe I collected her in March/April '88 and took her to XI at Leeming. I collected 4 from the factory, every time we strapped in, the guys that built them cried and gave the girl a pat goodbye.

On collecting a V Sqn jet from Warton, the taileron tips failed to appear in the mirrors on the Mech Mode control check; we adjourned to Taps and tried again (successfully) the next day.

However having fixed the Tonka for 18 yrs, all marks. What is the triangular frame in the front cockpit canopy area? I don't remember anything in that area. Perhaps a Herrick MOD?

(If it is classified, inside a transparent canopy might not have been the best place to put it!)

There's still a taileron actuator in it!
Looks really easy to get it out with no taileron in the way! No sliding down an oily taileron whilst grappling with the bl**dy thing!

Thanks to the pair of marking Tornado Tuesday with a visit to Windermere, Northbound yesterday eve about eight. It occurred that their noise and size is very impressive. If I was an enemy of our country considering mischief, the Tornado would be more intimidating than certain more recent aircraft.

I recall the first Station Taceval after 23 arrived. XI were fulfilling their deployment role, i.e. we were lying on a beach in Cyprus.

We sent 23 a postcard, addressed to

North Yorkshire
England

It arrived on the Ops desk at 23 in 3 days ;)

Thinking back 34 years, I don't recall exactly when the Team Tornado badge was issued to those on the conversion course at TTTE (Crew solo, end of course, e.t.c), but in my time at Cottesmore I don't remember seeing any badge unpicked.

Commercially, the only version I've ever seen for sale is the version with no wording on the bottom, but I was told at TTTE that this was effectively a copyright issue - whether true or not, I have no idea.
