I was going to suggest it was part of Area 51 because it was such an unusual shape.
If you look at this site (http://www.airfields-freeman.com/IN/Airfields_IN_N.htm)(about halfway daown) it seems there were a number of airfields constructed along these lines to allow ac to land into wind irrespective of wind direction.

This was one of many auxiliary fields associated with Navy training bases. Bunker Hill NAS (later USAF) was only a few miles away.
The theory was since carriers always steam into the wind, crosswinds were negligible, and thus training could disregard them. :eek:
But I like Kitbag's answer too. ;)
