A Qantas Airways Airbus A380 is expected to be out of service for around six weeks after it was damaged while under maintenance in Sydney.

The aircraft involved bears registration VH-OQF, and the incident happened in the week ended 17 April.

“During scheduled maintenance in Sydney, one of our A380s was damaged. We’ve engaged Airbus technical support to get the aircraft repaired as soon as possible,” the carrier says in a statement sent to Flightglobal.

The airline, however, would not disclose the extent of the damage from the incident

With the A380 out of service, Qantas will substitute Boeing 747-400s on some of its services from Sydney and Melbourne to Los Angeles.

Flightglobal’s Ascend Fleets database shows that Qantas has 12 A380s in its fleet, and eight more on order. It also has 12 747-400s.
