A man has been rushed to hospital with possible spinal injuries after his light plane rolled off the runway and crashed into a ditch at Tooradin Airport, in Melbourne’s south-east.

Emergency services attended the airstrip about 1.30pm after reports of the crash.

The pilot has been airlifted to hospital with suspected spinal injuries.

The light plane sustained significant damage during the crash and emergency services remain at the scene.

Channel 9 News reported the aircraft was making an approach to land when it was observed to be moving around a lot laterally. It was seen to impact a bank and slew through 180 degrees coming to rest facing in the opposite direction.

Happened to drop into YTDN, for a coffee at the flying school, completely unawares of this incident.

The aeroplane remains where it came to rest, and you'd swear it is just parked.....tho we were viewing it from a distance.

Good from a-far, but far from good.... and that was BEFORE it crashed.

In all fairness, the conditions down there were standard YTDN....challenging.
I went down in a warrior reasonably well loaded, in a nice light one like a cheetah, it'd be a handful regardless of the quality of the aeroplane.

Just saying.

Tooradin has a fairly frequent crosswind when operating on 22, usually anywhere from from around 160deg and rarely past 220deg unless it's a strong northerly. It's also gets a bit bumpy with the wind blowing over the mangroves as the runway is less than 100 metres from the water. It's generally not challenging to those that learnt or are based there and many a student from Moorabbin is flown over there at all times during the day and night to get their crosswind landings ticked off.
