View Full Version : Angel Flight pilots from Adelaide
Hi All,
Im a low hour CPL pilot who is interested in doing some AF. But I need a few more hours. The company mentioned that I could co-pilot on a flight and to try and run into a pilot to ask if I could tag along. Thats fine but kind of hard to do when there is no set call sign of the planes operating in an AF.
So I'm looking here to see if anyone is an AF pilot operating out of Adelaide and would have any idea how I could meet up with a willing AF Pilot.

Get on AngelFlight's Earth Angel list, to do the ground transport parts of the mission - ie drive between hospital and airport. When one comes up (and there's not many in Adelaide as far as I'm aware), if you get selected to do it you'll be sent details of the pilot and aircraft, so you can send them an email and ask. You never know what might come of it.
Even if you're not able to go on that particular flight, a lot of the time the pilot might call you when they get another one.

I've taken one or two Earth Angels along for a ride either to pick up or drop off a passenger.
SA and WA seem to be a but quiet for AFs. I always thought it was because of the distances involved until last month a friend of mine did one from JT to PBO :eek: about 5hrs each way.

A little bit of drift, but related to AF and carrying passengers.
I've done 20+ AF "missions" and my policy was not to carry anybody other than the "patient" and one carer, as a way to stay within the envelope (and minimise risk). I'm not available if, on inspection of the mission profile I believe there's someone along just for a trip to the big smoke i.e. an infant requiring specialist assessment, and the extended family are listed as Pax (I could be completely wrong of course).
I've learnt from doing one or two of these "extended family" missions the W+B quickly gets outside the envelope, and I'm aghast when I see the mission allocated to an AF pilot I know operating an identical A/C to mine, knowing the operation can only be overweight.

cannot say I have ever experienced having extras along for the ride who were not necessarily carers for the sick child / person. The most I was ever asked to carry was three including a cancer sufferer with not long to live, their spouse and child.
I think Angel flight would vet pretty carefully those they are putting up for the flights for the very reasons you mentioned.
Back to the original topic though, I see no issue with offering an earth angel a flight given that they also sacrifice their time to look after the patient but only get a boring as bat s**t drive for their trouble.

According to the Adelaide Advertiser today, there are 109 AF pilots in South Australia.
