The end has come. Tomorrow will be the last day of RAF Leuchars, the Army are ready to move in. A sad day for one of the Airforces finest Fighter Stations. Will be raising a wee dram to all who served there, in particular those who didn't come back.

I understand the airfield will stay open for the UAS and AEF - is that right? If so, will it also be available as a div for the units based at Lossie?

Yes Ken that is correct, so a little flying but nothing compared to last year :)

I understand the airfield will stay open for the UAS and AEF And hopefully the RAFFCA club. Had the pleasure of visiting them a couple of years ago and had a wonderful welcome.

Any chance it might still be used as an RLG at least?

Courtney, as far as I am aware it's a 24 hr but on call Div for Lossie. The UAS will continue to operate but might move to CXI site, I'm presuming a limited VAS might operate from the south site, there were a couple of Tincans the other day. I'm sure if you call ATC they will give you the actual details.

I hope they have a handover ceremony of the keys....

Mind you they will look scruffy on all those key rings, far better to just remove them all and hand over as box of loose keys, that should give the Pongo's a version of the Easter Egg hunt as they tour the station trying to match keys to locks. :p

I don't think the new Landlord will be unduly worried by locked doors. :p

Perhaps if the 'yes' campaign had won the Scottish Government could have granted the Russians landing rights for their Bears. Allow the crews to stretch their legs, have a pee, play a quick round, etc.

A very good friend of mine was the WO who lowered the RAF Ensign at Leuchars for the very last time, his daughter posted a video of the event on FB and it was quite a touching occasion. Speaking with him last night, he regarded lowering the Ensign as a great honour and one he will remember for the rest of his life, he also said it was also a sad occasion closing 104 years of RAF history, but the RAF will have a small enclave on the airfield from where he will finish out his RAF career.

I wonder how long until the first pongo's upon digging a trench, will it be before they realise there is a whole lot of water to bail out. ;)

No doubt they'll do what they did at places like Abingdon and build fences in all the wrong places on the premise that 'light' aircraft don't need taxiways.

A big thank you and farewell to the two civvy ladies who ran the Guardroom for so many years. May they long remember that ex Sqn Ldr, Mr Angry about whom we so often shared reminiscences.

They tried to do something similar at Aldergrove. And found out the hard way. They never learn. On another note they knocked down the Old Rock Block, it was advised they get ATO in first to clear some possible ordinance that might have been left. Again they ignored, and only when a contractor showed up at the guardroom with said stuff did they stop for thought.

Farewell Leuchars. A fine nine years spent with you. I took a good many things away and left a few behind.

The Apes were always digging trenches in Tenstmuir back in the day.
