View Full Version : Radio 2 Simon Mayo Confession

On my way home heard the confession on the Radio 2 Simon Mayo programme from a 'Mike', a 'junior pilot' on Op Northern Watch at a 'Turkish airbase' in the early 2000s, who was at a Friday night party where the DetCo, 'Tim', fell asleep and one of the American ladies painted his nails red. 'Mike' on his way to bed the next morning then buys all of the nail varnish remover at the BX so that 'Tim' has to wear his gloves at the Execs meeting the next morning & for the rest of the week before new supplies arrive.

'Tim' is described at the end of the story as 'now a very, very senior RAF officer'. Anybody have any ideas as to the identity of 'Tim'? I guess that 'Mike' has long since departed the service.

If its the VC10 det could 'Tim' be the son of a former Air Sec who has a vaguely Irish sounding surname.....

Mrs. M says that he should have bought a cheap clear nail varnish from the BX, painted it on top, and all would have come off together on kitchen paper. She says

Never let the truth get in the way of a good story - I'm sure he could have picked it off in that time. But buying up the entire stock of remover was inspired - perhaps not so eco pouring it down the drain. A good wheeze though.

Now what was the one about lime marmalade.....

I'm sure it was the F3 det - sounds like more their style!

The main constituent of nail polish remover is usually either acetone or ethyl acetate.

Wouldn't any organic solvent, such as alcohol, have removed the nail polish? Surely there was more than enough, gin, vodka, etc floating around to fulfil the purpose, or did "Mike" buy up all the booze on the base as well?

No F3s on Northern Watch as we were 'dan sarf' doing Southern Watch. So it can only be Vickers Funbus, Puffa-Puffa Jets or, by the sounds of it, more likely Jags.

Dream of what old chap? I would like to publically anounce that my bot-bot is a one-way valve for disposing of body waste!

LJ :ok:

PS. How do the PC brigade deal with tales like this on Simon Mayo as, apparently, what he had on his finger tips is perfectly alright these days?

Surely if it was a Pussy Cat det, no one would have noticed anything unusual....

I really do think this Forum could do with 'Like' buttons - others have them and threads like this leave one unfulfilled (yes I am sad), so for the record:

What a place - was it not a GR1/GR4 Sqn then? Think they moved to PSAB in 1998? I was there in 97 I think and Turkey was the place to be - they just kept on throwing dollars at you quicker than you could spend it!!

The GR1 (or what is 4 by then?) was doing Southern Watch in tents as well as the occasional Northern Watch - they moved from PSAB to Al Udeid when the F3s came to theatre due to the MiG23/25 threat around the time of DESERT FOX.

The funniest thing was that the GRs had endured years in crappy tents whilst looking at the buildings that the Bin Laden Building Co had built - as soon as they moved to the crappy 'Deid, then the F3 mates moved into the buildings (having finally been declared 'explosive free') and enjoyed air conditioned splendour and an Olympic size swimming pool from then on! :ok:

I wonder if 'Tim' is 'Sir Timo' - father of the MAA? That might be a fit?

He was promoted gp capt (and stn cdr Bruggen) in mid-2000 and promoted 1* late 2003 so unlikely.

Still think it's Tim O'***** - he was a sqn ldr on 10's (and thus potential to be the detco) and certainly in Incirlik 2001 (same time the Bear Cub (;)) was the 'big cheese' there).

Just to set the record straight....The GR1s did Southern and Northern Watch simultaneously. The jets moved out of Northern and handed over to the Jags around 98 I think. They were then flying out of Ali Al Salem AND Saudi until the Saudis got upset about dropping bombs (ironic looking at Yemen today!) so it was just Kuwait until TELIC when it was Kuwait and Al Udeid and then they moved permanently to Al Udeid in summer 03. F3s were only ever in Saudi - accommodation I cannot comment on!

My apologies, you're right - it was AAS, although it was still a sh!tehole as I recall with guys working out of 'plinked' HASs with large holes in the roof!

The move South and handover in the North was around the time of DESERT FOX. That Op, as we now know, took out a lot of Saddam's WMD production capability and unfortunately, due to the lack of weapon's inspector access, led Dubya and Bliar in making the the wrong call on WMD capability in 2002/3.

Isn't it funny how things are so mich clearer in hindsight?

When Incirlik's runway was being resurfaced, the pointy jets used the parallel taxiway, but that was too narrow for large aircraft.

So the tankers had to move to Antalaya.

Oh dear, what a pity, never mind. Of course some Brit bluntie found a $hithole in the middle of the bondhu which could be used for our accommodation, but the Spams were a bit cleverer (for once) and tested the water - to find that there was only one location where the water was actually safe.

The Sheraton! So we had a very pleasant time living in luxury, flying every other day and enjoying the poolside sunshine - all on HM. Due to the Turkish lire inflation rate, running up a bill for extras and then paying it off by credit card was an added bonus. Perfectly legal too!

Checking in has always been preferable to digging in!
