Flight Sim fan here...

Can a Dash 8-Q400 use Sumbrugh Airport in the Shetland Islands.

Wikipedia tells me it can, with a takeoff distance at max weight of 1400mtrs and the runway(09/27) length at Sumbrugh being 1500mtrs.

Very little tolerance!

Question, could it land at Sumburgh?

If you mean Sumburgh, there are Dashes operating into Lugano. A 1420m field that is also at 915' altitude.

The next question is, why would you only look at max weight figures? Will you always be there with 11,000lbs fuel or max load?

The runway length at Sumburgh may indeed be in the region of nearly 1500 metres but the actual TORA is less than 1350 metres, and the LDA about 1250 metres.

Yes - sorry - Sumburgh.

My assumption is that if the aircraft can use the airfield at max weight then it will cope with it when under this.

This is purely a question from a flight-sim fans point of view.

With a TORA of 1350m then a fully loaded Dash 8-Q400 couldn't use the airfield.

Thanks for the replies!

London City TORA 1,199m. Significant number of Q400 per day.

I once landed on Sumburgh r/w 09 in a Viscount, now that was an experience (1972). As we 180'd at the end of the runway, I was able to look down straight into the sea. They seem to have extended 09/27 since then, I'm sure it was only about 900m in those days and it didn't go across the A970 but there were traffic lights there. At 1500m an A320 could use it let alone a Dash 8-400.
By the way, I was standing on the flight deck - had to stand all the way from Inverness as there was no jump seat fitted - and as I was an Air Traffic Controller being detached to Sumburgh, the Captain insisted I stay there!

Chavvron - we share a little history I too spent two and a bit years in Sumburgh as an ATCO and also landed a couple of times up there standing on flight deck of the VC8! Rw27 & 15, mind you 27/09 was a little longer then in 89!
Happy times.....

I just did a 1 month detachment there during my ATCO Cadet Course; had the 'compulsory' flights with Loganair, once on the 'full circuit' (landing at the 'old' Lerwick airport) and the other out to Foula and back.
Enjoyed my short stay there right at the start of the oil boom.

It is a similar length to Guernsey which also gets Dash8-Q400s
