I'm referring of course to Afganistan's stunning last-ball victory yesterday over Scotland in International cricket with a four off the final delivery!

So did they have a pint afterwards, or does that team not imbibe due to Talibanophobia?

I'm shocked. What kind of sick joke is this? Are you trying to tell me that Scotland has a cricket team??

Was Chung by any chance playing for Afghan?

PPPuNers of a certain age will remember Chung as the "Tonto" to the "Lone Ranger" who was the Wolf of Kabul (aka 2 Lt Bill Sampson), in The Wizard.

Chung's weapon of choice was "Clicky-ba" an aged, cracked (but bound with brass wire) cricket bat.

On home territory:

Clicky-ba thundered, and men with crushed heads squirmed on the path. Dreadful sounds echoed up the cliffs as the vanguard of Yahaw Khan's army swung this way and that, retreating and advancing in turns ... In sheer desperation they attacked, but found themselves opposed not only by Chung, but by the twin daggers of the Wolf. He used those blades with a skill that had yet to be equalled. When he struck it was as sure as the attack of a snake. Men dropped. The daggers in the hands of the Wolf were red to their silver hilts

Or in Italy in WW2:

It was the last command that ever passed his lips. The foliage of a nearby tree rustled and a strange object flashed down. It landed with a thud on the soldier's helmet and even his steel helmet failed to protect his skull.

The object which had hurtled down was a cricket bat, much battered and ominously stained. The blade was split and bound in places with lengths of brass wire.

'Ho! I crack skulls!' howled a terrible voice

...Or was it Bungdit Din (or his close relation Sheikh Abdul Abulbul)? Either way, I'm sure an excess of tiffin was to blame.

If there is one thing worse than losing a cricket match, it would be losing to Scotland.

I'm sure Salmon and Sturgeon will come up with something fishy about how the MCC doesn't represent Scottish interests fairly and equitably and how when independent they'll be thrashing the all comers at the World Cup and winning the Ashes with half the series to spare :}

Why would the MCC be representing Scottish interests?

Sorry, I'll spell it out if you like, Scottish cricket interests.

Thanks. Why would they be doing that?

I've been out if the country for 7 months, I've not missed T93's return have I???

Have you ever thought of a career as a limbo dancer? If everything goes over your head so easily you'll be quite a success. But if I really must spell out in words of less than one syllable, Salmon does have form for this sort of thing and I was making a sarcastic reference to his Wimbledon antics

Of course you were. Now, perhaps you could answer my question.

Good to see the billions expended in A/Stan by the cricketing "invaders" has paid off....:D

Now the Taliban can field a team and A/Stan county cricket is a reality.

Oh, do keep up Melchett.

Just too funny.

They obviously enjoyed the after-match. (http://tvnz.co.nz/cricket-news/world-cup-six-wounded-in-afghanistan-gunfire-celebrations-6242969)

As long as the ICC continue to let minnow teams like the UAE, Afghanistan and England play in the World Cup the competition will be considered a bit of a joke tbh

No No No! Including the minnows doesn't make the competition a joke, Hempy, on the contrary. The phenomenal success of the football World Cup stems from its very inclusiveness which allows youngsters from Gabon to Gaza to identify with it.

If there's just a hint of a serious side to this most flippant of threads it's that the mere presence of an Afgan team at an international contest shows that all our blood and treasure expended there hasn't been an absolute and total waste!
