Hello all, another network query from me. I have a laptop running Windows 7 Home Premium (this is crucial as some solutions are not available in Home Premium).

One of the machines I'm attempting to connect to is my scanner controller, running that 'other flavour of Windows', shall we say:cool:. The connection is direct with a Cat 5 Ethernet cable. I've been able to connect before but for some reason the network is now Unidentified Network, Public Network.

I'm unable to switch back to Private Network, where I should have a choice between a Home or Work network. From hours of browsing, I understand this is a bug with Win 7 (or perhaps was, maybe it's fixed now). Usual scenario, a solution seems to work for one but not for others. There is no obvious way to simply switch back to Private.

Some resolutions I've read involve dabbling about in the registry. Frankly, I'm rather afraid to go there but if that what it takes then so be it. Must remember to create a restore point!

I'm not sure if posting this link is contravening the regs. but here goes:

Unidentified Networks - Set as Private or Public (http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/71408-unidentified-networks-set-private-public.html)

Option 1 - Not available in Home Premium.
Option 2 - Reg file download. Wondering if one of these may work, not sure if they can be trusted though. Any thoughts?

I posted here in the hope that someone had experienced the same situation and was able to solve it. Cheers..!

That .reg file looks pretty harmless to me - I would give it a go.
But yes, always make a restore point, and you'll need to restart before expecting a result.

BoogleB, thanks for the input, I'll give it a go.

Just for info:

Not saying it’s the same things, but had something similar once! It turned out that I had (knowingly) installed VirtualBox in association with another program. Once I removed it, no longer had the problem
