F/D is no more on the A330 MRTT and A400M.
Indeed, a certain Klopfstein, HUD Father, said it was useless.
Airbus then made a cut-down version when they launched the A320.
F/D is for rejects and now one must fly-by-the-bird.

The word "bird" is used for the HUD speed vektor indicator and inputs are then inertial.
Airbus tried to create illusion of HUD but the "bird" of the AF447 A330 was only a F/D variation and inputs came from the ADIRU alimented by airflow. It is why their "bird" disappeared as written in ACARS. Example of bad copy from the Viper by A...
The FBW Airbus' bird looks like, smells like, but is not HUD :}

Straight from the horse's mouth from France's Air Force tester...and yes that panic button to go into Direct Law is real but ONLY for military purposes.
The idea is that in case of missile attack crews on the A330 MRTT and A400M can do aggresive avoidance manouvers which they are trained to do and not on the menu for civilian purposes.
Btw, the A330 MRTT has one other Law for air-to-air refuelling in case things get lopsided.
I always had suspected that the military Airbus had far more advanced software and is very different beast.

HUD incorporates a flight director so I've no idea what the OP is on about!
