Even though there's a war on terror in progress, military officials say the rate of aviation accidents is inordinately high this year, according to a report in Aviation Week & Space Technology. The U.S. Air Force reports that the Class A accident rate has increased from 0.85 percent last year to 1.32 percent this year. A Class A accident is defined as one that results in more than $1 million in damage to the aircraft.

Why is this a surprise? Yes we are at "war" but that does not preclude you from having an accident, indeed with the pressure to get the job done and the more demanding flying during wartime, you are more likely to have accidents. Also as we are currently flying something like twice the hours we normally do then the accident rate could well increase (depending on how you define it, per 1000 hrs/per No. of ac etc)

A few thoughts:

So what.

Big deal.

And....?

Another meaningless statistic. Driving a tractor into an aircraft can cause $1 million of damage.
