A number of collisions occur between sky-divers after leaving the 'plane. The local drop zone has a notice specifying in large letters which way to turn, I think it's clockwise. Being knocked unconscious on the way down isn't a Good Thing even if using an AAD canopy opener.

In the 1970`s a skydiver crashed through the roof of a passing Dragon Rapide;
I think that the the jumper broke some bones and ended up in the cockpit. The Dragon pilot also suffered some injuries but managed to land safely.
I think it occured in the Odiham/Blackbushe area-anybody remember?

There's a vid on YouTube somewhere taken by a free-falling sky diver of a Chipmunk flying through the DZ narrowly missing the free-falling jumpers. CAA never traced the pilot AFAIK. (It wasn't me - ours was a different colour scheme!).

A while back now, but no less tragic:

One of the problems I had flying a jumpship was gliders flying straight through a NOTAMed drop zone without saying a word on the radio. Had to keep a sharp look out on jump run to ensure we had a clear DZ, despite the field being a dedicated parachuting facility.

When you did raise one on the radio, the level of arrogance was quite extraordinary. Incident reports filed but it was a tick in the box to justify the existence of some safety guy somewhere, nothing more.

My cousin once flew through a DZ, got reported, and Transport Canada nailed him.

I remember hearing of a 1960s Vauxhall Sports Day at Luton when army paras were dropped onto the field. Everybody thought somebody else had co-ordinated the drop with ATC and it ended up with a Br31 flying through the paras.

Maybe LTN man can confirm?

I believe it was actually over Halfpenny green.

Collision with airplane wing : Skydiving Fatalities : Skydiving Classifieds, Deland 2005 (http://www.dropzone.com/fatalities/Detailed/109.shtml)
Jumper collided with airplane wing and had his legs severed at the knee. Jumper was under canopy at the time of the collision. He landed and was taken to the hospital where he later died.
