RIP Nick Mitchley

Nick passed away on Wednesday after a skiing accident in Japan whilst on holiday with his wife. We went to school together and followed each others careers closely. Nick learnt to fly in Zambia and was trained at Scone (Perth) before joining Dan Air on the HS748 based in Aberdeen. He later flew for Britannia on 767 before leaving for Royal Brunei after a brief return to Bush flying where he has been eversince.

I believe that there will be a private service in Kyoto next week but a memorial service in Brunei second week of February for his friends and colleagues.

Very sad to hear about Nick's untimely death.
I flew with Nick on the 748 out of Newcastle, and he was an excellent operator, with a good pair of hands, The Budgie had no auto throttle or flight director, and an autopilot that disconnected if you didn't keep it in trim, so it was a perfect aircraft to learn your trade.
He was also annoyingly good at Asteroids table top video game, and regularly thrashed me in Liverpool terminal, during turnarounds on the mail contract.
Far too young.

An impossible act to follow!
Nick has been my fleet manager, for the past eight years.
Available to discuss any problem,whether personal or company related, Nick always showed an interest...I was almost beginning to understand his sense of humour too!!
We will all miss him tremendously, and his personal stamp on managing and training will be his legacy,for years to come.

Name rang a bell and I see he was my F/O on B737 July 1987 twice, night Corfu and a day Zakinthos a few days later ex Gatwick.

I am always sorry to hear about the death of people younger than me in particular even though I cannot put a face to his name.

Just a quick note to confirm that the memorial service for Nick in Brunei will be held at St George's Church in Bandar on Saturday 14th February at 9.00 AM.

I'm extremely sorry to hear of Nick's untimely passing. He was my boss in Brunei for a couple of years. A thoroughly good man. Effortlessly carried off his role as 'Head Boy' with charisma with a great cheeky sense of humour. You'll be missed. My condolences to his family.

It always seems to be the good guys that get taken early. I shared 9 years of my career with you in the abode and I can't remember you ever being anything other than thoroughly professional, cheerful and always willing to listen and offer help and advice.

As Yawstring says, a very difficult act to follow.

Very saddened to hear the news; a great loss to his friends, colleagues and aviation community. Worked with Nick extensively during my time with RBA, he was witty, good value and extremely able and knowledgeable. Always had time to listen and contribute.

Nick and I hit it off as soon as we met back in 91. We always lived in the same compound and you could usually find me at his place or him at my place any given day.

The laughs we shared together will never again be duplicated nor the roasting of so many of our fellow crew who will never know that they were the brunt of our jokes and those endless hilarious conversations we shared while Kaori would look upon us with that bemused smile.

I have to thank all of those pilots with such silly grievances and those unusual cockpit tendencies which we would rip apart and dissect until there would literally be nothing left to laugh about anymore. Your behavior was absolutely worth the headache it caused to so many others!

So Nick, wherever you may now be, rest assured that I will keep it up until that day arrives when all pilots act and fly as you and I always did!

I first met Nick when he first joined Brunei 26 years ago.
A loyal trusted friend who will be greatly missed.
He loved to make other people happy.
He cared about the people around him whether they be baggage handlers or managers.
Truly a hard act to follow.

A piece of me died on that snowy mountain.
