I just got called for a FO freighter interview. I can't go for a few months anyway, but when is the @$@#!$ ban going to be over? I know when managment hires back the 49'ers. Doesn't seem likely, does it. Is anything likely to change with the expiry of the pilots' contract this summer? I always thought that there was a solution to every problem. Was I wrong?

eric,

I wouldnt be to concerned - it appears that the union concerned has as much power as a fart in a cyclone. I would not put off your career for someone elses - the best thing the 49ers could do is the same as yourself, look for alternative employment. The needs of the one are often equal and always more immediate than the needs of the 49. You could always give 5% of your salary away to appease those less open minded as yourself

One step at a time:

1. Take the interview
2. Take the second interview
3. Recieve the letter saying you have been succesful, but there is not presently a postion
4. Receive the offer of a start date. NOW think about the ban.
5. Take the job. The ban is immoral, stupid, counterprodcutive, unfair, poorly thought out, not supported by many CX pilots.

(Ignore step 5 if you like...but follow 1-4)

All training courses for this year are full anyway, so the ban may never become an issue for you.

Its a great place to work! Good Luck!

eric, it'll be over when the dispute is resolved and the pilots are reinstated.

i have a letter from the AOA. it says that due to the recruitment ban thou shalt not join. it then advises to wait 2-3 months (management will fold)...finally they advise that december will be a good joining date...... it will definitely be over by then right?

the letter is dated 26 Aug 2001!

if i had joined as suggested by the assistant to the general secretary....... he would now be blacklisting me.

finally some answers: 235 is the recruitment target (25 FOs, 175 SOs and 35 Cadets)

all courses until 1 jan 03 are full. interviews are well underway to fill next yrs courses. (12 FOs and 125 SOs)

........... the info above is obtained from CX press releases (and by using a calculator!)

**** to any potential new joiners - keep every bit of correspondance that IFALPA and the AOA send you. make notes after every telephone call you have with them or your union rep. KEEP INFORMED.

Heard the same thing

No start dates for SO's until December January - if you are successful from here on in.

If they can't find a solition by then - to bad so sad they've had long enough , forget it move on take the job.

I'm an optimist assuming this Ban ends soon.
What are the pay scales Cathay is starting its s/o.
And what are the 3, 5 and 10 year salaries as well as other renumeration for living in Hong Kong.
It's been years since I looked at the numbers, but it's got to beat $1400/month on EI in Canada.

As things have worked out, I have another contract to finish until September anyway. Hope to shift the interview until the fall. So far so good. This dispute, on both sides reminds of me of a song...
A song that a ski guide friend of mine sings to his extremely wealthy clients, it goes something like this:

ME, ME
ME, ME, ME, ME, ME
ME, ME, ME, ME, ME
(pause for effect)
ME, ME
ME, ME, ME
ME, ME, ME
MEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!

Pick an appropriate tune, and it fits. I include myself in this of course.
