Hi guys,

I find myself in the most awkward situation ever... And I hope someone here may be able to give me some advice on what to do...

I had the exceptional opportunity to personally meet the owner of Air Asia, Kamarudin Meranun, who told me that if I ever needed a job, to let him know...

WOW!, you'll say... Yeah... Me too and then I got to this point...

I finished my training and sent him my CV and he forwarded it to the Director of Operations.This guy came back to me saying that the Malaysian Government has prohibited airlines to hire expat F/O (only nationals)... And that he couldn't do anything to help... :ugh:

I cannot believe there's NOTHING I can do to get that first job... :{

Has anyone got any kind of suggestion that will prevent me from hanging myself?

Thanks

There's more than one Air Asia ... i.e. Air Asia Indonesia, the one that crashed the other day, the F/O was French

There's also Thai and Filipino registered airlines who are part of the Air Asia group

So why don't you ask your contact in the company if he can sort you out something in one of the non-Malaysian subsidiaries?

Best bet would be to ask him to send your stuff down to Air Asia Indonesia.

Well, as far as I know, the Indonesian DGCA still require foreign pilots to have a minimum of 250 hours on type which came in to force at the start of 2013.

Unfortunately they are right. You have to try their subsidiary. Might get lucky with that. Don't give up...
Good luck...

Thanks guys for all your answers... I think it was just a silly hope to get through...

Unfortunately the Ops Director told me that the other countries are the same. The French F/O must have entered the company before the Govt. changed the rules, only a couple of years ago (Damn!!!!)

Anyway, will keep looking for this bloody first job!

Cheers :)

Do they need 3000 hours on commercial jets or is it 3000 hours on any type of aircraft(SEP/MEP etc)?:confused:

As mentioned earlier, foreigners need a minimum of 250 hours on type which is a DGCA requirement. If you wish to try anyway, by all means go ahead. This is the Garuda careers website (http://career.garuda-indonesia.com/).

i was under the assumption that Garuda hires expat FO's on CRJ's only.

does this mean, now 737NG is also open for expats ?

i m an expat with 850 hrs on 737NG, current, 3300 hrs, faa atpl .. etc. intermediate bahasa Indonesia skills as well if it helps in any way.

Actually, I take back what I said about the 250 hours on type rule still being enforced. It is no longer as 'stringent' as it was before since a new Deputy Director of Aircraft Operations at the DGCA has taken over the job.

It seems to be easier now, but with the request coming from the airline itself directly to the Director.

@training wheels
Can we expect them to remove the rule anytime soon?

Your guess is as good as mine. But it seems now that if an airline really wants you, then they have a better chance of DGCA approval, compared with before. And this is after talking directly with a DFO from one of the major airlines in Indonesia.
