I had my initial class 1 medical in June last year. As its up for renewal this month I am wondering how long I can leave it before having to go back up to Gatwick and do another initial?

Is it also the date of the medical examination that counts or the day of issue?

At the moment I'm not flying and I'm under 40 if this helps.

If anyone could point me to somewhere on the CAA's website that explains all this I would be grateful.

cheers.

Someone must know the answer to this.....

My Class 1 runs out this month too (June).

I have a couple of Qs to ask -
1. Does it automatically revert to a Class 2 (lasting for 5 years)
2. Should I renew the Class 1? Not expecting to be ready for employment until 2005.

I'm also under 40.

Cheers

My Class 1 has just expired. I was told by the medical team at Heathrow that it does revert to a Class 2 so I can continue to fly privately without renewing it (until 2003).

I also assume that an initial is just that, the 1st one. Thereafter you just need a renewal as and when. If you don’t renew before the expiry date it just means you can not legally fly.

If the class 2 medical is not on you medical certificate you are still flying illegal.
If the class 1 has to be renewed after 1 year after validity it will be treated as a first medical.
