That was a typo by me. BA won't tell me what the issue is yet so something has probably killed the engine
I'm just waiting the headlines "BA 787 engine blows up mid air everyone screaming in mad panic and confusion as crippled jet lands at LHR"

I saw a BA 78 on the radar with 7700 turning back to LHR earlier with a possible engine failure.

Does anyone have any details? Couldn't see a thread about it yet..

That would bump the shutdown rate for the Trent on the 787 up to around 2/million hours (.002/thousand). That's only an order of magnitude better than the ETOPS requirement :ugh:
787 has it's problems, but the engine IFSD rate is not one of them.

I still cant find out why or what the cause was so I cannot confirm this as yet but hopefully will get an answer later today.

Do you have a professional interest in why or are you part of the morbid, ambulance chasing radar spotters world?

The requirement for 180 minute ETOPS is 0.02/1000 hours - or 20 shutdowns per million engine operating hours.
The engine types on the 787 (Trent 1000 and GEnx-1B) are both running around 2 per million hours, or about 10 times better than the 180 minute ETOPS requirement. Such a high level of engine reliability is pretty much unprecedented for introduction of a new engine type,


Like I said before, the 787 has it's issues, but engine shutdown rate is NOT one of them.
