Recently flew with a training Capt who proceeded to get out the QRH whilst on the ground and calculated landing distances for dual hydraulics and emerg elect config. Too much time in the sim! Of course he flew like sh!t and then used me as his autopilot during my sector as his way is the only way to fly.

Another training Capt started questioning cabin crew on cabin safety in the pre-flight brief. That was probably the fastest I saw someone lose the support of their crew! He must have just done his SEP refresher.

Share some of yours.

Emergency Elec Config sounds like A330/340 to me

Well, I guess it is part of the job to deal with this kind of people.... And of course take it as part of your experience on the journey to the left seat, even if it is to learn how things should not be done. Also flown with FOs who do all kinds of calculations during flight, as long as they don't bug me asking to do all those non standard things I see no harm. But yes, I agree that the rule states that those kind of pilots usually are compensating for the lack of flying skills, of course there are exceptions.... The ones that fly seamless and knows all about theory and regulations. Very rare and I'm not included on that group unfortunately.
Happy new year!

True. But why is it that more often than not, guys who are least suited to the position of becoming an instructor, become instructors!

I know for a lot of the excellent pilots, the training positions are not attractive enough - too much training, disruption to lifestyle, poor remuneration. Airlines need to put ther money where their mouth is to attract these guys.

Those who can, do.
Those who can't, teach.
Those who can't even teach, go into politics (a.k.a
Management)

I,m not sure about crazy but the most practical and effective help I have received on the line is from a couple of fairly new DE 777 Captains who have a lot of previous heavy jet check and training experience.

When I suggested to each of them that they should join the training department they each politely stated almost the same thing. They were happy to pass on their experience on the line to those that wanted it but were not interested in joining the training department. It seems a great waste of talent and experience but I understand their position.

Great guys to fly with too who both run a relaxed but professional flight deck, get on really well with all the flight, cabin and ground crew and will offer to buy a beer on a layover.

Crazy? I wouldn't go that far but I have seen very weird on a few occasions.

Of course every skipper is free to run his pre-flight as he wishes, but personally I do the minimum required for safe flight to free up my mental capacity and avoid any distractions.

I don't the see the point on working out non-normal configs before take-off. If something happens and it's not time-critical you have the time to work it all out in the air.

If it's time-critical dire-circumstances stuff then you're committed to landing straight away whether you have the performance to stop or not. Simples.

I quite often hear in the briefing - " If it's an uncontrollable fire and immediate return to land we can stop using the full length of the runway using idle reverse and autobrake xxx and not overheat the brakes blah blah blah " Must be something that's being misconstrued from the PPCs.

I simply don't have a big enough brain to overcomplicate our already comprehensive procedure list.

Back in time eunuchs were the preferred guardians of harems around here, because they wouldn't touch the content, the women.

This heritage remains very much alive in this region in certain departments. The selections goes by the eunuch definition, choosing those who know how to do it by the holy books, but are incapable of doing it themselves, thus they do not touch the content either ..... ;)

Gutter, if and when you are upgraded one of things you will eventually learn is that not all the assholes are in the left hand seat. And EK, having a relatively short upgrade time, is full of tossers in the right seat just biding their time but not always containing their enthusiasm and knowledge of all things aviation. The ultimate karma result for some of these tossers is to end up having to fly with FOs like themselves. Sadly they are upgraded this week by instructors who were themselves upgraded last week.

glofish... do you dare to elaborate?

JAARule :ok:

What I noticed is, "tossers" don't recognise themselves as such, otherwise surely the endless CRM classes would have taught them something.

Well said ... Where there are exceptions the general concept stands true

Please note my ;)!

Although there is some truth to what i meant. For two reasons.

First, whenever the overall spirit and morale reaches a low like at EK, due to archaic management, there will be a 'negative selection'. Meaning that in both fleet and training only the people remain that 'need' such a job for whatever reason. The ones that would be suited and talented for more often than not leave disgusted.

Second, such companies love this situation, because it leaves them with the kind of 'leaders' they prefer. Either similarly inclined to lead by book and threat, or so young, overeager and inexperienced, that they can be easily manipulated to the companies preference. No questions, no constructive criticism, just blind following.

I have experienced excellent guys, they could improve our performance and knowledge beyond what's written in the books, because they transferred experience, common sense and extended knowledge. They slowly become an endangered species, due to self elimination and negative selection.

JJARule said it perfectly:

Sadly they are upgraded this week by instructors who were themselves upgraded last week.

Not necessarily bad guys, but colorless company parrots.

Who knows Gutter, you may just have proven that point more succinctly than you could have imagined!!! :)

Glofish...

The good thing is we are all entitled to an opinion.

Lets just leave it at that.
