It's time on duty, not time in the air, that counts for flight crew scheduling, according to an appeals court ruling handed down Friday. The federal appeals court backed up the long-held
contention by the FAA and pilots' groups that unscheduled flight delays should be included in the 16-hour maximum workday set by the FAA. The Air Transport Association and the Regional Airline Association disagreed and took the issue to court. The three-judge panel unanimously upheld the FAA's and pilots' view. The pilots want more, however, seeking a maximum 12-hour day with eight hours of flight time followed by 10 hours of rest. According to The New York Times, the FAA has vowed to start enforcing the current 17-year-old rule ... six months from now.
