O.C.I holders applying for jobs

Hey! Just wanted to know if an O.C.I holder can convert their licenses and apply for airline jobs in India. I don't hold an indian passport but can apply for one after holding O.C.I card for more than 5 years. Any feedback appreciated.

I met a couple of O.C.I. card holders working for airlines in India without an Indian passport but with an Indian licence.

It sounds like a huge ballache to convert to an Indian licence.

If you have some experience then why would you?

You can get a better contract as an expat.

OCI holders can apply for jobs like locals do but you need to hold the necessary DGCA licenses , medical and RTR license


Here are a few issues I have seen that OCI / PIO had to face

1. You will need security clearance from the Ministry of Home Affairs ( MHA ) for RTR license , DGCA Computer number and finally the DGCA license itself
The relevant authority forwards to MHA and only once approved do they issue the license
THis security clearance can take its own sweet time and there is nothing much you can do to speed up the process other than wait

2. The other issue is the DGCA 10+2 requirement with Math and Physics at 12th grade
If you board is not from India you need to approach the Association of Indian Universities ( AIU ) in Delhi and get an equivalency certificate saying your educational qualification meets Indian 10 +2 standards

3. Another issue is dependent upon the license you will be applying whether CPL / ATPL
For CPL you need 200 hours within the last 5 years
For ATPL you need 150 hours within the last 12 months

Also DGCA's definition of cross country time is 100nm from point of departure for meeting the cross country requirements for CPL and ATPL . Most countries usually use 50nm

4. The DGCA does not issue an open rating unless you meet certain experience requirements . Even small aircraft like C172 / c152 have to be specifically endorsed on the license in order to exercise the privileges

If your checkride / skill test was on different aircraft than one available in India then you need to pass the DGCA Tech specific exam for that particular aircraft as well


P.S : As far as I know in order to hold an Indian Passport you will have to give up your foreign citizenship irrespective of how many years you had an OCI card since India does not allow dual citizenship

So, I am guessing I can get a FATA and work as a foreigner for captain position. Is it true that FATA person has to get indian medical. I am an OCI holder.

If you fly in India on an Indian License then you will be paid Indian salary and have to pay Indian taxes which are around 33%. You will not get housing and other allowances in most cases.

If you fly in India as a foreigner with foreign licenses you will need a FATA and also have to get an Indian medical. The pay will be as per expat contract with allowances and taxes are usually paid by the employer. However, no job security as they only hire if needed. FATA only given to Captains due to shortage. OCI means you don't have to worry about visa issues. Some companies including 9W have tried to get OCI's to accept Indian terms. Those guys left for FD, Oman and elsewhere.

I am Indian born but a foreign passport and foriegn licence , OCI holder. I flew in India from 2007 to 2014 and I was on a FATA the whole time , in due time we started doing the Indian medicals (2010) . Things to consider are : MUST have command time for a FATA ( 750 hours PIC on type ie B737/ A320 ) : no FO ON FATA, airline must prove they need foreign captains. I was at Jet and was given a contract till the end of 2016, but seeing the scene in India these days with plenty of capt from spice moving to jet , I got out with a pretty decent job back at home country . I seriously doubt that there is any need for captains anymore. Hope this helps. And of course the other option is that you get an Indian Lic.

I got my DGCA licence when I had my Indian passport, I need to get multi endorsed on Indian licence

Any advise how can I do that ??

Issue I have a foreign passport. Proof of flying in different country, need photocopy of passport with visa.
