View Full Version : Where is the Leadership from CX?

I have been watching for quite some time now and it seems to me that CX is without a true leader.

When Ivan Chu took over from John Slosar back in August 2013 after 3 years of undistinguished growth (According to Centre of Aviation news article, Cathay Pacific's incoming CEO Ivan Chu faces important strategic decisions, some urgent | CAPA - Centre for Aviation (http://centreforaviation.com/analysis/cathay-pacifics-incoming-ceo-ivan-chu-faces-important-strategic-decisions-some-urgent-123973)) I expected to see him leading from the front with new ideas and innovations to put Cathay back at the top of Aviation Industry, however....

I keep reading the weekly updates and I hardly see Ivan make any comments or give a weekly update. I mean - aside from maybe one or two updates since he took over(and his damn funny Re-Branding) he hasn't really been leading the company has he? Where is he? At least John Slosar was more visible... Ivan..... Ivan who?

This makes me think that we are lacking someone who can lead from the front and make the decisions that need to be made. We are in a difficult period at CX, many crisis points need a firm hand to plot our future course within the aviation industry but we are Leader-less....

Everyone is looking for Leadership from the top and the top management is very quiet. Cathay is quietly falling behind in so many areas it's a wonder we even get some of the awards that we have received.

Where do we go from here? And where is Ivan?

I think Coke zero has a valid point. I personally think that CX has lost direction. Up until now it has been easy for them to make money. Going forward, they have lost their competitive edge and direction. It does fee like that we are just drifting and not leading the industry.

Their management style is firmly stuck in the 1980's with a Maggie Thatcher negotiating style rather than a negotiation style that is more suited to the current working force!

I do think that top management should start looking at the personalities in charge of FOP and start putting fresh blood in to the key positions to be able to lead us into the future.:ok:

Think CHINA!!, do you actually think he is bothered what you think? The world as you know it will probably change fairly dramatically in a few years. Cathay = Air China Hong Kong.

I don't think the Maggie Thatcher analogy is quite correct but otherwise a great post.

While she, Ronald Reagan, and even JFK (especially during the Cuban Missile crisis) DID issue ultimatums, flat stops, and a lot of bluster from time to time, they DID negotiate....just doing things behind the scenes and people did benefit. Even though Kruschev did lose face, substantial amounts of tactical nukes were quietly removed from US satellite nations (as well as the US sweeping under the rug a shootdown of a U-2 overflying Cuba and taking no action about it) as part of a deal made in the face of a crisis. And the world averted nuclear war by some folks coming to their senses.


Although they might find it immensely unpalatable, true leaders recognize that some things in life are, and need to be, give and take. My way or the highway might work in the very short term, but never works in the long run.

We don't even get this; just some form of juvenile arrogant ego trip that would rather sink the ship than see it sail forth smoothly and profitably for all.

If there is any Leadership, it's keeping a very low profile. Nobody asks so nobody listens. Nothing is offered so nothing is given back. Everybody joins and only retirees leave. COS will be slowly reduced by our 'Leaders' until eventually they reach rock bottom - just like a drug addict who eventually needs help. By then, this once motivated workforce of talented Aircrew, will be gone either physically or mentally (or both).
If you have to ask 'Where are our Leaders" we don't have any...........;)

You must be new.
We're pushed, not lead.
While some at the top of the food chain were users, they're all pushers.

Not much has changed there for a very long time.

Not sure how well versed you are in British political history but you might want to research Margaret Thatcher and the 1984 coal miners' strike. Effectively, she and her government emasculated the union movement in the UK by defeating Arthur Scargill and the NUM.

I think Frogman's analogy is quite appropriate and might even turn out to be prophetic.

There are no leaders at CX, only managers hoping things go smoothly lest their next appointment be announced on their behalf.

Presuming your tongue is firmly 'in' cheek here. The awards that CX is chasing are presented by former Swire cronies and characters from the chesterfields of Mayfair clubs.

Awards are important to only certain people, they often have another part of their facial anatomy firmly pressed 'between' cheeks however....
