Just wondering if anyone could shed some light on a question....

I have a GPSMAP 696 with the GA25MCX supplementary external antenna...

Is it within the realms of legality (in the UK) to attach this magnetic antenna to the roof of a rental PA28 and have the wire enter the cabin either via door seal or pilots window flap?

I'm having conflicting arguments in my head about this..:uhoh:

Anyone???

First of all I think that you are gonna have difficulty attaching a magnetic
antenna to an aluminum airframe.

Even if OP duct-tapes the thing to the airframe, it's going to influence the magnetic compass... :hmm:

I have made myself a small metal plate with 2 small rubber suction discs behind that I stick to an (inside ) plexiglas surface, works perfect in airplanes (and gliders). No need at all to have the antenna outside, and you risk damaging the cable after some time.

...supplementary external antenna...

It's not intended that this kind of antenna be actually mounted outside.

When it says 'external' it means external to the unit, rather than external to the aircraft. It will work perfectly well in a PA28 on top of the instrument panel with a clear view of the windscreen.

Thanks for all the replies folks.

I think common sense must have deserted me when I typed the original post.

Glad it's all cleared up now :)
