CX 885 LAX-HKG went out today November 10 with 3 cockpit crew members after the SO went unfit (working on his days off). Tech stop in RJAA to pick up a new crew.

The SO was a G day call-out from HKG who then went unfit in LA?

That'll be a cost effective G day call-out!

Could have been a swap. Be careful about calling people out for working on G days.

At least they didn't use discretion and try to press through to HKG with just 3 of them.

So the SO goes sick, gets almost a week of allowances (supplementing income) and goes California touring? Not the first time it's happened.

Dan,

you have exemplified the sheer simplicity of CC. Don't answer your phone, don't work on G days. Helping out only helps them cover their crew shortage.

Or like the flight out of YYZ last week that had last minute sickness, and CC couldn't find a replacement. 300 people in hotel rooms for 12 hours.....
It's ON !!

I love, in advance, how the next "management update" (or whatever it's called) will state how all these poor souls had to endure a delayed flight because of "crew sickness". It couldn't POSSIBLY be due to inadequate staffing and reserve coverage?????

Saturday 8 November two of the HKG -JFK flights departed with 3 FO's, no SO's avail..... Had to dig into the limited res. FO's... and some overtime was collected by the FO's. Almost to easy.

It truly isn't rocket science. If you feel a bit squeamish just think on the fact that Cathay Pacific does CC all the time............
Just do your roster, don't answer your phone, stay below the radar and do what they pay you to do. Nothing more. What's wrong with that?

broadband, study your FTLs. Crew cannot depart while planning to use discretion.

Slight misunderstanding here ColonelAngus. I know the FLTs pretty damn well and totally agree with you.

Doesn't mean that some people haven't bent the definition before with some very shaky interpretations. Dare I say it, potentially indefensible interpretations if something were to go wrong.......

Colonel, once you have commenced your FDP (signed on), the company can request you to use Discretion (7.2.1.1). Happened regularly with rest on one of the LHR patterns, and was common departing North America on the Jumbo.
Now it's not supposed to be "regular practice" - the grey area.....
I'm not sure of the exact details of the LAX flight in question, but if they signed on, then found out they were one short.....

So: 885 LAX-HKG 3 man crew

Should in fact read: 885 LAX - NRT 3 man crew.

Slow news day?

Subtle difference to the above. You cannot agree to extend if the company knew about the issue before sign on.

All points well-taken. I would think that prior to sign-on, the mentioned captain would have known that one pilot would not be signing on and therefore would not have been able, legally and ethically, to agree to discretion after sign-on since the problem was known to have existed prior to sign on.

2 Captains and 1 FO on the flight. I guess they couldn't find any based FO volunteers to work on their G day to make it a 4 man crew.

Damn right they couldn't.
