Hey all,

I'll be in NYC with my dad for a few days next week.

I'm looking for a place to rent C172. I'm looking at renting it for one day, to do some 3-4 hours of flying in the area. Never been anywhere on the east coast so I have no idea where to go.

I'm basically looking for a clean C172R, S or SP that's not too expensive and where I can get a quick checkout, and somewhere we can get to from Manhattan in a short time.

Anyone have recommendations for a place to rent or places to fly to within 200NM?

Thanks to all

I have rented from both Certified Flyers at Morristown NJ, KMMU and also Ventura at Republic on Long Island, KFRG. Both very friendly, Certified have C172SP, Ventura use PA28. You can easily fly down the Hudson VFR corridor from both and get back in less than an hour of flight time.

Basically what arn3696 said. KFRG/Republic has plenty of rental options (Long Island Aviators, Ventura, Nassau Flyers, Academy of Aviation) and is not too far from NYC. On a good day, it'll take 45mins to drive from Manhattan to FRG. Options in NJ are similar (KMMU, KCDW).

Plenty of 172's available for rent.

It's easy to fly around NYC. You can fly up and down the Hudson River in the SFRA without entering the Class B, or if you want (and I recommend), flying inside the Class B and you can fly right across Central Park.

As far as other places to fly within 200NM:
- Montauk (the far end of Long Island), great place to go for lunch (mainly summer)
- Martha's Vineyard or Nantucket (mainly summer also)
- Block Island (yet again summer oriented)
- Boston
- Atlantic City
- The Berkshires, Catskills or Poconos
- Follow the Hudson River northbound for a bit and enjoy the scenery then turn around

If you plan on flying VFR in & around NYC without an instructor or local pilot along, you'll want to take the free online training course regarding Special Flight Rules for the NYC area at www.faa.safety.gov.

Check these out as well:
Aviation Safety Videos (http://aviationsafetyvideos.com/dcsfravideos.html)
http://www.faasafety.gov/files/gslac/courses/content/79/776/kneeboard.pdf

Also, if you get within 60 nm of Washington DC, which could fall in the 200 mile range you mention, you must, by regulation. take special online training for VFR fliying in and near the DC SFRA also available at FAA.safety.gov

Enjoy your trip!

Booked my tickets hotel and got the visum.
I'll be there 10-14.
I sent a mail to Long Island Aviators, Academy of Aviation and Nassau Flyers.

Great, enjoy your time in NYC!

The link from HeloDrvr is important, for the SFRA course.

Also, take the time to familiarize yourself with TFRs in the area, which arise frequently. Sporting event TFRs can be tricky as they won't be listed on the official FAA TFR page or provided by flight briefers, so use caution.

What's the best place to have food at or around an airport in the long island area? I'm looking for a good place to have lunch.
