Bit of advice please. Last two days I have a box on bottom of screen, from AVG.cz?? saying AVG needs updating, however if I open my AVG programme and request to update, it states it is already on latest version. Is this a scam?

The AVG program regularly updates its virus database.
My apparently up to date AVG on this computer currently has virus database 4031.1.1/7967, downloaded just short of 6 hours ago.
My laptop is showing 4189/8464, 21 hours old.

Additionally the AVG program itself is occasionally replaced completely. This is an update of the program itself, rather than the virus database. The program updated on one of my computers a week or so ago. Different computers are invited to update at different times within, as far as I can tell, a period of a week or so, presumably so they don't all hammer the servers at once.
On this computer, which has not updated recently, I have AVG version 9.0.932.
My laptop, which recently updated, requiring a reboot, shows AVG version 2015.0.5315

This probably explains the very different virus database version numbers and I shall prod AVG to see if it wants to update here...
... AVG prodded, no change.

You could go to www.avg.com/ and click the link for AVG2015 free which is www.avg.com/free-antivirus-download

But go to the source, don't trust links on forums, even from people who tell you not to trust them!

Edit:
I've gone to the source for AVG on this macgine. The latest version of the program itself is 2015.0.5557, released on October 23.

FYI, AVG is originally a Czech piece of software.

Source: I'm an AVG reseller and have been for about 8 years now.

Thanks for replies all. My only concern was, why tell me it needs updating when it doesnt. Thought it might have been sinister

There is a difference between to "Upgrade" and "Update". It's important to recognise this when looking at pop-up suggestions from any program.

One of my computers here has received AVG 2015, the other is still on AVG 2014. No worries, both are receiving database updates very frequently.
