For those of you contemplating coming to China take a close look at the NET PAY vs. what is advertised. I am a 5 year veteran of flying in China and have watched the pay grow substantially here. At my own airline we have had 3 pay raises after signing each 3 year contract which all raised the pay terms considerably each time. There are however some new recruiting agencies who have begun to throw out contracts advertised with a 36% premium thrown in as most contracts pay your Chinese taxes due for you. The problem is the companies aren't really paying these amounts to the Chinese tax authority and you will NOT receive a year end tax statement showing this was paid on your behalf in taxes so you could actually claim it on your home country taxes if even required or necessary. There are some very good paying contracts in China and the demand for experienced time on type Captains is intense but don't believe all the figures which some of the recruiting agencies are advertising. For example one agency now advertises an annual salary of $307,000 to $496,000 before taxes. What they are doing is including the 36% tax benefit and also an education allowance should you have up to 2 children in school. Actual take home is around 20K per month and a few approaching 25K per month but not 40K per month as highly inflated and exaggerated pay claims by some recruiting agencies.

A further caveat to that is that the "36%" figure is a maximum figure, on the basis you are resident in China.

If you are on a commuting contract, or indeed with the new overseas based options available, then this figure drops substantially - closer to 10-15% tax paid.

Re a tax certificate; I understand at least China Southern do provide a tax paid certificate, but on the basis of 15-30% depending on days spent in China.
