According to a news.com.au article Australia has been ranked as the 4th cheapest country to fly in per 100km. Is it time that we as a country accept that airfares are going to have to rise. The recent losses made by major airlines is surely not solely to blame on management, low airfares are now part of the problem and is the consumers fault who now demand to travel melbourne to sydney for less than the taxi ride to the airport.

MEL-SYD had doubled in frequencies over the past 5 years thanks to Tiger and Jetstar entering the route, they have up to 20 frequencies each way on some days between the both of them. Those seats didn't exist 5 years ago.

It's certainly not the fourth cheapest if you want to fly an aeroplane yourself however!

Who started pushing prices down in the first place? Who put ridiculous capacity on some routes and called it "competition"? And who actively tried to convince political leaders and the travelling public that the flights could be sustainably operated at these low prices?

Management all the way.

Management have given the false expectation to the public they can travel that cheaply, aided and abetted by a spineless regulator, and a aqueous governments.

Big business has shown that it is far too immature to self regulate.

QF & VA domestically make all their money in peak hour BNE-SYD-MEL-CBR (except for PER flights).


These fares will increase.


TT & JQ will never ever be allowed to fly to CBR, which must have highest yielding fares in OZ.


The QF/VA marketshare fight is over.

I suppose that it is the consumers fault that the airlines have to buy expensive aircraft and pay expensive staff. If it was not for the consumers, there would be no airlines, no aircraft and no flight crew.

Oh I forgot, the Corporations Act require the Board to look after the shareholders interest first.

So, if it was not for the consumers, there would be no airlines, no aircraft and no flight crew and no shareholders to complain that there was no return on their investment.

I recall in 1987 my fare as a 17 year old PAX to Cairns from Sydney return was $377.00.

If I compare to now I think I could still get something close.

With inflation considered, air fares these days are cheap as chips.

How can this be so cheap ?

To me this would seem to be clearly an increasingly uneconomic business.

Oh hang on that's the same with all businesses these days. Bugger that, I think I will retire.
