Some external hard drive enclosures may have trouble with big drives (3TB and over) - I recently had occasion to swap out a 3TB WD Green for a 4TB WD Red in a Javelin enclosure and nothing it plugged it into would recognise it (either as a single NTFS partition or a single ext3 partition).

A hunch made me swap the big drive into a Nextstar CX enclosure and all was kosher and fully recognised.

Vantec ? NexStar CX SuperSpeed - NST-310S3-BK- 3.5'' SATA to USB 3.0 External Hard Drive Enclosure (http://www.vantecusa.com/en/product/view_detail/416) is good if a bit expensive.

Just a thought.

(mixture FYI the 4TB drive is the off-site backup of my ReadyNAS WD Red 2x3TB RAID1 backup system that does double duty for the Mac and Windows machines - I just use removable drive trays for the *nix machines)
