Russ Greenwell/Paul only took the photo so his reputation is intact as he didn't actually write the headline. The term 'mini tornado' is of course a misinterpretation.

Like the 'vantage point' thread I suspect use of a long lens gives a false impression by foreshortening the background.

With Airbanda, except that it is the distance from camera to subject(s) that causes the foreshortening; a telescopic lens keeps the perspective exactly the same, just increases the apparent size/closeness of the subject(s).
