View Full Version : What seem to be mouse issues.

I am experiencing problems with my mouse, particularly in two areas which, while superficially distinct, are perhaps related.

In the BBC News website, within the UK section relating to choosing between the different geographical regions of England, the region at the top of the list is "North West England". Clicking on that lets me choose from a list of areas within that region and if I do so, that's what I get. Then clicking on the "back" arrow backs me out to the North West England list again - perfect! Until a few weeks ago, doing the same for, say, the East Midlands region did exactly the same and clicking "back" from viewing an area in the East Midlands used to bring me back out to the East Midlands list again so that I could select another area in the East Midlands. Now clicking to back out from an East Midlands area (and equally from an area in any other region in England) brings me back to the "North West" list which is very irritating when trying to review the BBC News in an orderly fashion over my early morning coffee. Occasionally I think I see a brief flash of a different screen when I've clicked "reload" as if, perhaps, it's gone back two pages instead of just one. It doesn't go wrong at all, ever, when I go through exactly the same process within, say, the Scotland lists.

Now I'd normally put that down to a c--k up by the BBC and forget about it but I have another problem.... When I want to enlarge certain sorts of thumbnails (here, for example:- Renfrew Airport - Glasgow, Scotland, Building (http://www.glasgowarchitecture.co.uk/renfrew-airport) ) I click on the first one I want to see - whichever it may be - and it opens perfectly. Thereafter when I click on another I get a blank screen and have to "reload current page" and then wait for that icon to change to "stop" and then back to reload, whereupon the enlarged image opens perfectly in a new window. In the case of some websites even that isn't enough because once the "reload current page" has reappeared I have to click on it yet again to get my enlarged image. If I revisit any of those thumbnails during the same session on the computer it works perfectly first time as it's coming from cache (I imagine). This process used to work perfectly, just the way it was intended.
Both this thumbnail issue and the BBC one appeared on the same day about eight weeks ago. Perhaps one time in fifty both problems don't happen, even now.
So I thought it was a hardware problem with the mouse - you know what they're like - so I changed my long-in-use wireless mouse for another one I have - no change. Then I tried a cabled USB mouse but with no change once again. Now I'm using a PS2 cabled mouse from Logitech, once I found the right hole, but it's just the same. I did specify each new mouse correctly in Control Panel before using it and I have tried changing the click timing/duration, selecting throughout the range offered.

This is clearly too technical for me so can anybody help, please? It's driving me bonkers.

Thanks for that Henry. It didn't do any of this a couple of months ago and using four different replacement mice (all of which worked perfectly before) didn't make any difference whatsoever to either group of symptoms. They each behaved in exactly the same way as the first mouse and as each other, even though they were each totally different. Does that still mean it's likely to be the "bounce", do you think?

Just to show my ignorance, do the wifi and cabled, the USB and the PS2 mice all share the same driver?

One remedy that I have used with success is to commit minor mouse surgery and solder a small capacitor across the offending switch. I seem to recall a cap value of 1nF (one nanofarad) but I would recommend trying 100pF, 1nF, 10nF and 100nF to see which is needed.

Well... if you've got time on your hands you could do such a thing.

But given how cheap mice are these days, its not really worth the hassle.

Thank you, Henry Crun and mixture. I have explained myself inadequately, I'm sorry.
I've tried a total of five different mice, the original wireless USB one and four replacements (one different wireless USB of a different make, two distinct cable USB mice and then one cable PS2 mouse. In fact each of the five mice is from a different manufacturer).
The problem wasn't there at all a couple of months ago and only occurs in the two situations that I mentioned - in every other operation all of the five mice work perfectly. I honestly cannot understand that the same problem is at all likely to have appeared simultaneously in the guts of all five very different mice at precisely the same time.
I was expecting a diagnosis of some shared circuitry or card in my computer - shared by all five mice, I mean - or perhaps the click speed or some other user setting needs to be changed.
Perhaps I'm barking up the wrong tree but I thought that I'd tried enough actual mice, all different and pretty much covering the whole range of what is available (while adjusting the hardware setting in CP for each in turn), for the problem to lie within all of the mice. It's not the cost of a mouse which is swaying me - indeed one of the cable USB mice is a brand new one.
Since the problem occurs only on one tiny part of the BBC news site and not on apparently identical other bits I thought at first that it was down to some update or change by the BBC but the thumbnail problem turning up identically and at the same time on lots of different sites seems to put the lie to that.

What browser are you using. I just tried the Glasgow site, and it seems to be working for me.

Does your mouse/mice work with other programs ??

Its a wierd problem.

That's turned out to be an interesting one, Avtrician, thank you...

I opened IE for the first time in years and the thumbnails appeared to work as they should (more testing needed!) but the BBC site failed identically to how I described above. I have used Pale Moon for about a year and Firefox for years before that but both of those browsers only began to show these issues since about two months ago when the faults appeared simultaneously (so far as I could tell at the time) for the first time. Your suggested browser change test has brought about the first time when the one fault (BBC News England) has appeared when the other (thumbnails) has been absent which is interesting but still above my pay grade! While I am not going to adopt IE as my browser of choice, the fact that the thumbnails appear to work on it (but not the BBC News England) while failing on the Mozilla-derived browsers may offer a clue to those wiser than I.

Thank you again, Henry Crun, for your suggestion about adblockers. I suspended Adblock Edge and tested the two situations but the problems still occurred. By the way, your posting was passed to me by PPRuNe by e-mail though I didn't see it here on the thread.

Some of the posts in this thread seem to be either missing or hidden??

Have you tried the basics of deleting all History and Cookies?

Since your problem appears to occur regardless of the browser in use I think I would be looking elsewhere.

henry crun has decided to delete all of his posts on this thread, as is his prerogative.

Thank you, Ancient Observer, I am über-manic about history and cookies (and the Flash ones too) and, so far as is reasonably practicable, haven't had either for years. So far as missing posts are concerned, all of mine are here but I believe that at least one of Henry Crun's may be missing. Of course, he may have deleted it after I had received the advising e-mail from PPRuNe though I'm not certain that he can do that (?). Ah, thanks to Saab Dastard, I now know that he can and clearly has!

Thank you, vulcanised. I would have agreed with you completely until I followed Avtrician's advice from just above but now I am a little more perplexed but in a different way.

I didn't see why the two issues should have appeared simultaneously and not have been cured by all of the rodent changes unless it was something within my machine, especially since I have been using the same browser on the same machine with the same settings and privacy and security since before the Tay Bridge Disaster. I did change from XP to Win7 Ultimate in April but that was long before the problems cropped up. Trying IE with the result that the thumbnails appeared to work may provide a clue.
