Sounds like a name developed by some pimple-faced 25 year old McKinsey consultant. Not good.

Here is what we know about the Tata-SIA venture:

1. What’s in a name: The airline’s brands name, Vistara, was unveiled today and the company has started a new Twitter account. The name is inspired by ‘vistaar’, a sanskrit word meaning “limitless expanse”.

2. Logo: The airline also unveiled its new star-shaped logo on their Twitter account:

3. Shareholding: Tata Sons, the holding company of Tata Group, partnered with Singapore Airlines on September 19, 2013, to launch this airline with an initial investment of $100 million. Tata Sons holds 51% stake while the remainder is with Singapore Airlines.

4. Airbus over Boeing: Singapore Airlines chose Airbus’s A320 for this venture. Aircraft will be leased.

5. Full-service: Unlike Air Asia, which aims to revolutionise low-budget travel in India, TATA-SIA venture is going to be a full-service airline. After the collapse of Kingfisher, Jet Airways and Air India are the only players left in India’s full-service market.

6. “TATA- SIA is most likely starting a full-service airline which will mean it will be more focused on corporate traveler. Don’t see any impact on fares but introduction of new service levels,” Kapil Kaul, South Asia CEO at Centre for Aviation, told Quartz.

7 Hub: TATA SIA Airlines Limited will be based in New Delhi. All flights, including linked flights, will originate in Delhi and all aircraft will return to Delhi at night.

8. Route map: According to the documents submitted to the Directorate General of Civil Aviation, Tata-SIA plans to operate 87 weekly flights during the first year of its operation. The airline is likely to have 14 flights a week connecting Delhi to Mumbai, Bangalore, Ahmedabad and Hyderabad. Apart from covering the big cities, there are going to be seven flights a week to Srinagar, Patna and Chandigarh.

9. Uniform: The cabin crew will not be dressed in saris or skirts, but in pants. Vistara says that their uniform, designed by Abraham & Thakore, is practical and embodies the best of Indian traditional wear.

10. Outsourcing strategy: The airline has tied up with Air India, which will manage its ground-handling and engineering services.
“There are many pros with outsourcing such as negotiating costs and soliciting bids from different players; not investing in infrastructure; not having to look for and hire specialised people; not getting involved in labour contracts, and so on,” Steve Forte, New York-based former chief executive of Jet Airways told Livemint.

11. Team: Tata veteran Prasad Menon is the chairman of TATA SIA Airlines Limited. He serves on the boards of several Tata companies, including Tata Industries, Tata Chemicals, Tata Projects and Tata Consulting Engineers.

Lot of expectation from this airline.

This name is already giving Jet Airways the jitters. Shri Goyal is considering dropping the LCC Jetlite & hybrid Jet Konnect business models. Going in for full service to compete with the new entity in the domestic market.

Whether this will work or not in a highly competitive market where airlines are bleeding except one, is to be seen.

For the customer, its a win win situation.

The name has already ensured that TATA SIA are on the back foot. They certainly could have come up with a much more appealing name. For some reason if their service and operational standards do not live up to the expectations of the travelling public , that would be the death knell for the project.

Jet will again rotate back to LCC if spicejet folds....! Jets service now leaves a lot to be desired as does its equipment. It is going to be primarily a feeder service to its new partner and that is it.

Quite sure Tata will roll out a decent product considering its bandwidth, however cannot figure out for the life of me why such a corny name.....

In the end if the market is ready for full service then they will do great, if not they will end up doing what jet did, going loco.....

The problem is the name was designed by some ad agency / PR firm whizz kid who has no idea about aviation and how it relates to the common man. You combine that with a management that is trying various new things to appeal to the traveller and you have a name like Vistara. This is much like SIA's present experiment in Scoot , a struggling name and a struggling airline. It's just like flying , you try out things like MPL , modern cockpit practises , excess CRM , new training techniques and what happens is you go on to condone mediocrity. The end result is you have crashes like the many we have had in the last one month , with more dead bodies , terrible personal loss , broken aircraft among the many things. Have a nice day people....

News at Livemint :
In September 2012, India allowed foreign airlines to invest up to 49% in an Indian airline, provided substantial ownership and control remained with Indian nationals. Photo: Hindustan Times New Delhi: Is India beginning to insist that its policy on foreign airlines investing in local ones be adhered to in letter and in spirit? The Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) has written to the civil aviation ministry, asking whether the issuance of a licence to Air Asia India Pvt. Ltd, an airline effectively controlled by a Malaysian company, was in violation of the country’s airline ownership rules, especially those regarding control. The move is likely to have repercussions for the two other airlines that have foreign investment—the Tata-Singapore Airlines Ltd (SIA) joint venture called Vistara, and Jet Airways (India) Ltd. Spokespersons for AirAsia India and Tata-SIA declined comment. An e-mail, text message and calls made to a spokesperson for Jet Airways remained unanswered. In September 2012, India allowed foreign airlines to invest up to 49% in an Indian airline, provided substantial ownership and control remained with Indian nationals. Although it was initially designed to help Indian airlines shore up their financials and improve their operating performance with the help of foreign airlines keen to tap the growing Indian market, the new policy also controversially allowed foreign airlines to start new Indian airlines with local partners. Etihad Airways PJSC subsequently invested $379 million in Jet for a 24% stake. AirAsia Bhd of Malaysia said it would hold 49%—with Tata Sons Ltd holding 30% and Telestra Tradeplace Pvt. Ltd, 21%—in AirAsia India. And Singapore Airlines said it would hold 49%, with Tata Sons holding 51%, in Tata-SIA. The boards of airline start-ups like AirAsia India and Vistara as well as Jet Airways, after the investment by Etihad, may be dominated by Indian nationals, but operational control effectively vests with the foreign partner, some analysts say. “We see control with foreign joint venture partners visible, especially on day-to-day operations, but level of management control would vary from airline to airline,” said Kapil Kaul, South Asia chief executive officer at consulting firm Capa Centre for Aviation. “See Etihad and AirAsia in driver’s seat at Jet Airways and AirAsia India but at Vistara, Tata is in control but unfortunately not visible to a level required,” he added. In a letter last month to the aviation ministry, the PMO asked the ministry whether it had failed in its duties by clearing the airline and violated rules that specify that the substantial ownership and control of a local airline should rest with Indian nationals, according to two people with direct knowledge of the matter who asked not to be named. The PMO has also asked the ministry to find out who is responsible for conducting due diligence of substantial ownership and effective control when an airline licence is granted, according to a person familiar with the matter who asked not to be identified. Jitender Bhargava, a former Air India Ltd executive director, said hasty and shoddy implementation of the foreign direct investment policy has raised questions about the issue of substantive ownership and control. “It is quite clear who is controlling some of the new airlines. It is apparent that the due diligence conducted had left a lot to be desired, apparently on account of extraneous factors,” Bhargava said. A second person familiar with the situation said the ministry had already submitted its views to the courts on substantial ownership and effective control. The Delhi high court is examining a public interest litigation (PIL) on the issue. The PIL, filed by politician Subramanian Swamy, alleges that in AirAsia’s case, the Indian owners Tata Sons and Telestra are bound by clauses in their agreements that effectively give control to AirAsia, Mint reported on 25 July 2013. The investment by Tata Sons is strictly limited to only $9 million with no obligations or responsibilities as a shareholder in any form, management or control of the business, Swamy claimed. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation, which examined AirAsia India’s proposal, did not make the shareholding agreement public when it placed a notice earlier this year in the public domain seeking comments on the airline’s application. The issue of control cannot be ignored, said an Air India executive who spoke on condition of anonymity. “The PMO has hit the nail on the head,” the executive said. “When we moved to allowing foreign airlines, did we examine how bilateral flying rights will be impacted? These are the sovereign rights of India. Not only will a foreign airline get flying rights mandated to that country, but also use it from the Indian side in partnership with the local investor.”

The new Delhi-based airline plans to connect Mumbai, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Goa, Chandigarh, Srinagar, Jammu and Patna in the first year of its operations
The new Delhi-based airline plans to connect Mumbai, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Goa, Chandigarh, Srinagar, Jammu and Patna in the first year of its operations

NEW DELHI: Paving the way for launch of its flights, Tata-Singapore Airlines joint venture airline Vistara was today granted flying permit by aviation regulator DGCA, almost nine months after it applied for the licence.

The new full-service carrier would "shortly" announce its flight schedules and open ticket bookings, an airline official said.

Vistara currently has two leased Airbus A-320s in its fleet and plans to induct three more by March next year.

The new Delhi-based airline plans to connect Mumbai, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Goa, Chandigarh, Srinagar, Jammu and Patna in the first year of its operations.

"I am delighted that we have successfully cleared the final requirement and secured the AOP (Air Operator's Permit). We are thankful to the Ministry of Civil Aviation for their support and guidance during the entire process," Vistara chief executive Phee Teik Yeoh said.

Vistara chairman Prasad Menon said in a statement, "Receiving the AOP is a key milestone for Vistara... We are all looking forward to the first flight with excitement."

The airline, in which Tata Sons holds 51 per cent stake and Singapore Airlines remaining 49 per cent, plans to operate 87 flights in the first year, with five A320s and then scale it up to 301 flights by the fourth year.

Once it takes off, Vistara will be the third full service carrier after state-run Air India and Jet AirwaysBSE 1.77 %.

A Vistara spokesperson said the airline "will soon make an announcement on the start of sales, routes and schedules".

"Over the last few months, the Vistara team has been focused on complying with regulatory requirements for all procedural checks and finally the proving flights to qualify for the AOP," she said.

Menon, the airline's chairman, said the company was "aware of the expectations" and would strive to live up to it as it "looks forward to shaping a success story in Indian aviation with the realisation of this dream".

Tata Sons had announced forming a joint venture with Singapore Airlines in September 2013 to set up a full service airline, a year after the then Manmohan Singh government allowed investment by foreign airlines in the domestic carriers.

The airline had applied to the DGCA for the permit in April and had planned to launch services by September, which has got delayed.

Vistara has already planned to lease 20 Airbus A320s, including seven fuel-efficient A320 Neos in the next four years.

Industry sources, however, said it would be difficult for the Delhi-based airline to hit the skies after the arrival of winter season, which is known for thick foggy conditions leading to delays and cancellation of flights.

NEW DELHI: Tata-SIA joint venture airline Vistara is all ready for take off today with its first flight from Delhi to Mumbai, ushering in a heightened competition in the domestic aviation market.

The launch of the new full-service airline will also mark the re-entry of the Tata Group in the airline business after over six decades. The group holds 30 per cent stake in the domestic arm of the Malaysian budget airline AirAsia India.

Vistara will be the third full-service carrier in the country, after state-run Air India and private carrier Jet Airways.

The Tata Group had announced in September last year the formation of a 51:49 joint venture with Singapore Airlines to launch a full-service carrier in the country.

The two JV partners had made attempts to enter the domestic skies earlier too, but in vain.

The airline had applied to the directorate general of civil aviation (DGCA) for the flying permit in April last year but could get it only late last year, after a delay of almost nine months.

Phee Teik Yeoh, CEO, Vistara, with others during an event where Tata Group-owned Vistara unveiled the first look of its cabin, in New Delhi on Monday.

On December 18 last, Vistara had announced the launch of its operations from January 9 with flight from Delhi to Mumbai and Ahmedabad.

Vistara, which has two leased A320s as of now, will operate 148-seater Airbus A320-200 with 16 seats in business class, 36 in premium economy and 96 in economy on these routes.

The airline will operate flights from its Delhi base to Goa, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Ahmedabad, Hyderabad, Chandigarh, Srinagar, Jammu and Patna in the first year, the airline had stated in the plan, submitted to DGCA at the time of applying for AOP.

It plans to operate 87 flights in the first year, with five leased Airbus A-320s, and then scale it up to 301 flights by the fourth year with a fleet of A320s.

Both TATA & SIA are blue blooded aviation entities, professional, with solid business ethics and customer orientation. Am sure this airline will succeed in the long run. Its here to stay.:ok:

If the powers that be had not scuttled this airline's start up plan a decade ago, maybe the aviation scenario in India could have been different then what it is today.:O
