RIP all the poor souls who perished in this man made MH-17 tragedy.
The blame game has started in earnest. But what the traveling public wants to know is could this have been averted?

Yes certainly it could have! As soon as this conflict started some reputed airlines re routed their flight paths avoiding overflying this region. Most did not, till this tragedy enforced them. Maybe the NOTAMS were not forceful enough, and the air corridor was open, but still in the interest of safety why was an alternate route not used avoiding the conflict zone?

Because diversions COSTS money, which is of paramount importance to airline managements. What about lives? What do they cost? Any tangible amount possible?

Airlines globally, are constantly flying into & out of troubled spots and airports with their fingers crossed, wanting their cash registers ringing. Do civilian airlines really need to do this?

Its up to their managements to ascertain the risks vs profit motive, both to passengers & crew thoroughly BEFORE another tragedy like this occurs in other parts of this troubled world.

Methinks greed over rules need.:=

Longer flights drop to a lower position on GDS displays, as Elapsed Flight Time is a primary display criterion. Longer flights are thus less likely to be sold, and it amounts to commercial considerations, or if you prefer to call it that, greed.

ICAO and ATA truly dropped the ball. Insurers could have gotten the message out to operators reminding them of the consequences of flying in known areas of conflict. EASA, the FAA, and other agencies should have been forceful.

Crewmwmbers need to be more involved with flight planning in various parts of the globe too.

To the innocent crew, and passengers... RIP.

To the family and friends... condolences, and hopes of justice being served.

To the cold blooded murderers... may you be brought to justice and pay the price... and that's all the way to the top.

UN? For nice in your wasted existence... do something worthy.... it would be a first for that group.


19/07/2014 - I should have added this too. Safety divisions of every airline unions, Director of Safety of every airline too need to be proactive to keep their crews and passengers out of harms way
