What does black and white mean to you fellow JBers? My understanding is probably a little more formal than Mrs Fliegs....Her view perhaps warranted given this is the venue?

Helm Bar Surfers Helm Bar Home (http://www.helmbarsurfers.com.au/)

Mrs Fliegs and I have been there several times, and a magnificent place it is....watching the sun set over the river, enjoying their food drink etc....

Of course there is nothing for it but to ring the host and confirm their personal / actual interpretation of 'Black and White'...but what say you fine folk???

I personally think one can never be over dressed......

Perhaps they mean collar and cuffs (ahem)!

However given that this bar has the word surfer in it I'd just find a surf life saver's cap with black and whites stripes and get your wife to don one too (for the rest clothes might be optional).

If the organizers don't appreciate the caps then you can simply take them off... (the caps I mean). ;)

Drawing on my (genuinely) vast experience of the entertainments industry, I would suggest you are expected to attend in attire that is coloured Black and or white...

You can use imagination , perhaps you in all white, your wife in all black? Chess board design? Something traditionally black or white (tennis gear for example)? Collingwood AFL shirt?

Cue for a music video (oh er missus... on the music thread, I mean)! :\

In the spirit of the surfy thing I wonder if Peaches (on the Beaches) would be appropriate?

Yes, they did. 1978 from memory !

And INXS also had a song called Black and White.

What about causing a kurfuffle and go as the black and white minstrels ?

More like "Golden Brown" being the Gold Coast !

(Can't think of a title with weed in it !)

You could cause a real bang and one go as an Aboriginal and one as a White person ;)

Of for goodness sake man, "Sweet Leaf" by Black Sabbath would suffice surely? ;)

And to think I always thought that golden brown was about a tan!

Sorry, didn't know that and not a fan of Sabbath.

Edit
I didn't know it was about Heroin until I heard an interview a couple of years ago !

Me too! I'm also one of the many that thought the line went "lays me down with my mancheros" and wondered what the heck mancheros were.

Then I found out they're singing - "with my mind she runs".

Still haven't a flipping clue what that means

Reminds me of the Golliwog on Robertson Jam and Biscuits !

(I think that is how it was spelt).

Did you know that the Black & White Minstrel Show was the first entertainment to be shown in UK in colour?

Don't overthink the invitation. It's simply an invitation to be creative (or not) using only black and white. Those who want to can wear a penguin suit, those who don't, tennis attire. And anything in between is OK.

Don't overthink the invitation.

Exactly! Drop your car keys in the bowl and the door and see what happens in chiaroscuro!
