Rest in peace Rik. You made us smile.

" remember, treat your kite like a woman! .... Get in her five times a day and take her to heaven and back.... Wooof

A real shame. His role of Squadron Commander the Lord Flasheart was stunning. He always reminded me of a certain ex-Lighning flt cdr at Brawdy: confident, funny, great company whereas JC had blond hair and a 'tache!

"Anyone can be a navigator as long as he can tell his arse from his elbow..." - the only bit of banter the METS boys could throw at us at Finningbobs.

RIP Rik.

Rick:: Do any of you lot know Summer Holiday by Cliff Richard?
Suggs:: You 'um it, I'll smash your face in.
Rick:: I'll go sit over there...

Classic. RIP

In a world of 15 minutes of fame, Rik was at least a "twenty-minuter"

Who can write an epitaph, now we have lost "The People's Poet"?

RIP

In a world of very funny men, he was indeed just about the funniest of them all. RIP Rik..

Flasheart: Ah! Tally ho, then! Back to the bar. You should join the Flying Corps, George. That's the way to fight a war. Tasty tuck, soft beds and a uniform so smart it's got a PhD from Cambridge.

[Flasheart gestures at Baldrick.]
Flasheart: You could even bring the breath monster here. Anyone can be a navigator if he can tell his arse from his elbow.

Blackadder: Well, that's Baldrick out, I fear . . .

Darling: I shouldn't worry about it too much, Blackadder. Flying's all about navigation. As long as you've got a good navigator I'm sure you'll be fine.

[Darling sniggers as he opens the door to reveal Baldrick in flying gear. Baldrick enters. Darling leaves.]

RIP Rik

All of his characters were satires that echoed with those of us in the Services at the time, Black Adder IV especially creating a cult that is timeless.
Very sad indeed to see his passing.
You felt you knew him.
Haraka is a bit quiet tonight.....

Or there's:

Lord Flasheart (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0562201/): Enter the man who has no underwear. Ask me why.
Lieutenant George (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0491402/): Why do you have no underwear, Lord Flash?
Lord Flasheart (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0562201/): Because the pants haven't been built yet that'll take the job on!

and

Lord Flasheart (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0562201/): Is it? Well, that's a piece of luck. Thought I'd landed sausage side. Ha! Mind if I use your phone? If word gets out that I'm missing, 500 girls would kill themselves. I wouldn't want them on my conscience, not when they ought to be on my face!

But as the dastardly MP Alan B*stard, a man ahead of his time or a role model for the future.

I'll raise a glass tonight. A damned shame he's gone. Great comedian. Appeared to be a quiet, reserved man. God bless, & safe journey.

I watched the first episode of The Young Ones (broadcast 9 Nov '82) in the TV room at Cranwell, the day after I arrived at IOT, having seen it trailed on the BBC. I had the room to myself, although by the end of the series, Rick impersonations were quite the thing.

Alan B'Stard: You know the really great thing about a fudged coalition is that neither of us need to carry out a single promise of our election manifestos.

RIP one of my favourite comedians - particularly "the young ones" caught the spirit of the humour of the time.
His character Alan B'Stard went beyond mere comedy though - I thought he was voice marketing for Tony Blair!

It was terribly sad news anyway, but having just watched the clip posted by Akrotiri71 (my birthplace!) it generated a physiological reaction:(

I thought JKR dreamed up Gilderoy Lock(flash)hart for Rik. He'd have been even better than Ken Branagh.

God speed, Rik.

Just very sad.
The word 'genius' is often tossed around nowadays.
In my humble opinion, he was just that.
Condolences to his family. :{
